A "WEDDING JOURNEY POSTPONED.
Joe !!nznr Matrimonial lnfcliritio.
Joseph Hume's lliird matrimonial
Tcatnrc is not destined to be as felici
tous as lie ltnd hoped. Yesterday he
TRis sertvd -with papers iu a suit in
stituted ia ihe snierior court of
Conta Costa county by his first wife,
Mrs. Jennie Hume, to cause the de
cree in hi? second divorce suit to be
modified.
On last Wednesday 31 r. Hume mar
ried Miss Harriet Macbeth, daughter
ot Dr. Macbeth, of Berkeley, and
departed for the Palace hotel, intend
ing to proceed to Monterey and subse
quently to New York and Paris on an
fxtended bridal trip.
The marriage was not only a sur
prise to Hume's Berkeley friends, but
also to his first wife. She at once
consulted her attorneys, aud the pa
pers in the suit were hastily prepared
for service Wfore Mr. Hume aud his
luide could leave the state. They
were served on Hume j esterday at the
Palace hotel, aud his trip for the pres
ent will have to be M?tioued.
Hume's first wife obtained a divorce
from liim some months ago. They
were afterward reunited and subse
quently again divorced, Hume lcing
the plaintifTin the second suit.
By the decree in the second suit
Hume was given the custody of four
of his children. Mrs. Hume retaining
the youngest, an infant. She now
asks that the decree be so modified
that she be given Hie custody of all
the children, together with a suitable
allowance for their support and main
tenance. At the time of the divorce
Hume made no objection to Mrs.
Hume having the control of the
children, but in the event declined to
rwnemler them in his will.
Mr. Hume now states that the pres
ent action is brought to annoy him.
Mrs. Jennie Hnmeleing piquedat his
marriage with MKs Mncltetli. He also
alleges that he paid her $30,.00 in sat
isfaction of all claims at the timeof the
second divorce, and asserts that lie will
ik give her at present a further sum.
He al-o states that Mrs. Hume was
aware of his contemplated marriage
with Miss Maclwth. He will contest
the present action and h:is indefinitely
postponed hi-. bridal trip. S". '.

Salmon Plrntifnl on the Sacramento.
Salmon are running iu large num
bers at present and on Wednesday a
few boats secured as high as 100 each.
The cannery started up Weduesdsiy
and will no doubt have a busy season.
Since the fishermen have been on
their strike the salmon have had a
chance to get up the river and its
tributaries to spawn. It is reported
that one day last week Mayberry
slough, a branch of the San Joaquin,
about thirty feet in width, was so filled
with salmon that a x?rson could have
easily crossed on their backs. Mr.
Briggs, secretary of the fishermen's
union is authority for this statement,
the truth of which we have not the
slightest doubt. - lien tela New Era.
A Deserved Rebuke.
The Review owes its readers an
apology for wasting words upon two
or three iusiguificant scrubs, who
have waulonly insulted the entire
Rcwspaper fraternity of the sUiic or
Washington by inducing some credu
lous and Junfortunate type-dealers to
trust them for material, and setting
themselves up as editors. They know
slxmt as much about the resiionsibil
ties of journalism and the duties there
of as they know about Sanscrit. It is
not at all necessary that the names of
these contemptible little curs should
be named, since the yelping they will
set np when they read this allusion
will quickly disclose their identity.

Somebody of an inventive tnrn of
mind rives ns the metric svptem. 4Minr
inanutslielV'bntin a nickel. It is
claimed that our nickel five cent piece
( holds the key to the linear measures
j anil freights. The diameter of this
coin is two centimeters, and its weight
1 five jjnimmes. Five of them placed in
a row will, of course, give the length
of the decimeter, and two of them will
weigh a decagramme. As the kioliter
I is a cubic meter, the key to the
measures of length, it is also the key
I to the measures of capacity. Any
'person, therefore, who is fortunate
I enough to own a five-cent nickel, may
carry in his pocket the metric system
j of weights and measures. Cleveland
i Plaimlealer.
This, of course, is remarkable, but
it does not half state the case. For
instance, three nickles placed in a row
will be the exact price of one drink,
and five placed almost any way are
equivalent to two. Two nickels to
gether arc equal (nominally) to one
copof the North western Railroader,
though as a matter of fact thev do not
compare with it in value, and GO
nickels will take the paper for a
whole year. Twenty thousand nickels
will give the exact value of a S1,000
bill. Five nickles placed on top of
each other will give a pile just live
times as high as one nickel 13 thick,
while one nickle by itself if dropped
into the proper slot will give you
almost anything from a cake of chew
ing gnm to a life insurance ticket.
It is a wonderful coin, is the nickel.

Indins: from His Own Kxperience.
The congregation of a church at
Elk Bock were much shocked upon
learning that their preacher had
departed under most discreditable
circumstances. On the following
Sunday it seemed to be the aim of
nearly every- one to hush up the
scandal, and, under great restraint,
many nninterestingconversations were
held, merely to prove that the members
of the church could rise above sensa
tional gossip. .Tust before the services
were closed lirother Elijah P. lirook
rod rose and said:
'Brethren and sisters, since we last
met in this house something which
seems to have cast a gloom over the
congregation h:is occurred. We were
all much attached to our minister; in
fact, we loved him. and I now propose
that we oiler up a prayer for the
wanderer."
A sensational wave swept over the
audience. Another brother arose, and
turning to Elijah P. lironkrod, said:
"I am astonished that yon should
desire this congregation to pray for
our erring minister you above all
others."
"Why?"
"Because he ran away with vonr
wife."
"Yes, I know," Elijah replied and
that is the reason why I think that he
will need our pravcrs." ArUansaw
