Regarding opposition in Brooklyn
to the proposition lo consolidate that
city and New York into one munici
pality, tlie New York correspondent of
the Philadelphia Ledger Avrites to that
Journal ns follew: "But it is really dif
ficult to understand why Brooklyn
should be opposed to consolidation
milli Xew York on cither sentimental
or financial grounds. Is Brooklyn so
uch better governed than New York
that she should desire independence?
Are not her streets dirtier and poorer
than even those in this city? Is not
her tax rate higher, and isn't she un
der the dominion ot a ring fully as
b&d as Tammany Hall? Look at the
figures: Brooklyn has an estimated pop
ulation of S33,000, New York of 1,800,
000. Brooklyn's tax rate is 2.94, while
Ner York's is only 1.93. Brooklyn's
boBded debt is $40,402,203, or about
$4.94 per capita ot population. In this
she has the advantage ot New York,
trhose debt is 96,999,281, or about
$5.39 per capita. This advantage is
counter-balanced, however, by the
greater value of New York's real
property, which amounts to $1,G03,
S33,113, or about SS.90 per capita of
population, while Brooklyn is $42S,
4S3,6S1, or only S5.13 per capita. Thus
Brooklyn would gain rather than lose
by the consolidation with New York.
Her citizens would become in name, a3
veil as in tact, citizens of the
metropolis, and the united municipal
ity "would, next to London, become
tfee greatest and richest in the world.
It is noticeable that editorial comment
oa this is decidedly in favor of consolidation.-1
Captain John O'Brien was in The
Astorian oflice yesterday looking at
the parade go by.
As the veterans filed past, he said
"There's a man I haven't seen for
twenty years." pointing to Major E. A.
Weed.
"The first time I saw him," said the
captain, "was under trying circum
stances. It was at Golden Farm in
the great Seven Days fight in the early
suninier of 'G2. 3Iy company was
supporting a battery but we had
fallen back, and I stopped to give the
confederates the benefit of three or
four remaining cartridges. There was
one gun left, a 30 pounder, that if
fired would do good execution. I
called upon the members of the com
pany of a New York regiment to help
serve the gun. The first to respond
was your present city editor. As he
seized the sponge staff" a bullet struck
him in the leg and he felL Ho was
captured and laid in Libb prison for
a long while. It w.is twenty years"
after that I met him in California the
second time, and now wo meet again
for the third time in our lives.
Bigelow, one ot the editors of the
Orcgonian, was in the next regiment,
from Vermont, I think, that supported
us that day. 'Tis twenty-eight years
ago, but "the circiunstanco seems as
fresh in my memory, as though it took
place yesterday."

by the Union Pacific Railroad com
pauy to induce people to travel on
their line to this country. It is a
curiosity worth seeiug. It starts eff:
"The Grand New Empire," and talks
about Oregon and Washington, about
the climate and the forests and all the
rest of it and never says Astoria once.
Little cross road stations are men
tioned; places made up of three fam
ilies and a yellow dog are given the
prominence of caps, underscored; but
nary a word about Astoria
Such commercial centers as Riparia
and Moscow are prominently set forth,
but not a word of the seaport of
Oregon, and on the back is a big map,
an "authentic one," Kalama and
Rainier and Jewell and Vernonia are
there, but there wasn't room for
Astoria.
