ASTORIA, OHEGON:
FRIDAY

THEY WANT MORE WAGES,
Fire Hunlrei Pnget Sonnl Stean
lioat leu on a Strike.
axixcri:.ii: of$.i iE?T.ixni:n.
The Union Pacific railway company
is now feeling the electric thrill of
saotber strike. This time it is among
steamboat employes, not trainmen.
Yesterday afternoou Captain J. W.
Troup, superintendent of the com
pany's water lines, received a dispatch
from the steamboat men's union of
Washington, stating that unless the
company acceeded to certain demands
the men would not go to work to
morrow morning. The men all want
an advance of S3 per month. The
following shows the class of men who
are going out, with their present rates
of pay per menth:
Oilers, S40; firemen, S4u; wood pass
ers $40; coal passers $33, and deck
hands S10.
The "Union Pacific company is not
the only one to sutler, as the strike ex
tends all over the Sound. The union
consists or some f00 men. 2G0 of whom
are employed by Capt. Troup. None
of the masters or officers of the steam
ers are in the movement They are
satisfied with the present arrange
ment. Captain Troup took last night's
train for the Sound, and will attempt
to settle the trouble this afternoon.
The companies to be affected say most
emphatically that they will not grant
the advance nor do intend to let their
boats be idle either. Captain Troup
swid to a reiorter just before he left
the depot that if he cannot persuade
the men to return to work at the old
figures he will employ new men ont
f the large crowd of idle people now
iu Seattle and Tacoma.
"There is no danger," said he, "of a
strike occurring here. Onr men on
this division are all well satisfied. The
Union Pacific, as is well known, has
established all the rates on the Sound.
Every other company is gauged by
our payrolls." Telcqram. 7.
Satisfactorily Settled.
Special to Tn k Astouiax.j
Seattle, May S. The strike of the
steamboat men was settled this morn
ing and all the boats are now running.
All the companies conceded the men's
demands.

Chinese Emperor in Danger.
New Yokk, May 7.--A Shanghai
cable dispatch says it was rumored a
few weeks ago that the emperor of
China was dead, and much excitement
prevailed. The foreign council made
inquiries, but got no further informa
tion. After a week, however, decrees
from the throne began to reappear,
and the Vermillion mark on them
showed that the emperor was alive.
There was, nevertheless, some ground
for the nimor. A cup of white rose
tea provided for the emperor was
tasted by a favorite courtier, the son
of a Manchu military officer, and a
few hours afterward the boy died in
agony, and with all symptoms of
poisoning. The emperor has been iu
fear of assassination and always has
Iris food tasted before he touches it
His terror was increased by this inci
dent and he fell sick.

DEATH OF A PIONEER WOMAN.
Mr?. Sarah A. Buxton Dies at the Aeof
Eishty-Scvcn Year.
The death of Mrs. Sarah A. Buxton
yesterday removes one of the pioueer
women of America and one of the
bravest and best of those whose lives
have graced the i.ages of history. She
was aed 87 years and four mouths at
the fail" of her death. She was born
iu Ykenes, Vermont, in 1SGM. her .
pareuts moving to northern New York '
four ears later. During the war of
1W2 the town in which she lived was
attacked by Indians and many inhabi
tants massacred. An American caval
ryman rescued her.
" In 1S3D, 51 years ago, she accom
panied a band of pioneers overland ou
horseback, being one of the first
women to enter Washington. The
trip was eventful, bnt no lives were
lost. "When passing through Minnesota
they were overtaken by 600 Chippe
was, who were at war with the Sionx.
The Indians treated them well, how
ever, accompanying them somo dis
tance to protect them from hostile
bauds.
Mrs. Bnxton settled at Whitman
station near Walla Walla, where she
soon married. Shu devoted several
years to missionary work among the
Indians and encountered perils that
would have furnished Cooper with
material for many a "Leatherstocking
Tale."
After her husband's death she
moved to Forest Grove, Oregon. In
1S51 she moved to Portland, spending
most of her time there until some
three months ago, when she moved to
this ciiv v.ith her daughter, Mrs.
Reynolds, at 1,-10S Third street.
The remains were shipped to Forest
Grove for interment last evening.
