$ht gaitjj IMtOfian, "ASTORIA. OREGON: FRIOAY MAY 9. 1890 Citjraa CHHty Official Paper. WELL DONE! The following dispatch was wired last night: Astoeia, Or., May S, 1893. C P. Huntington, President S. P. R. R.t Fourth and Toicnscnd Streets, San Fran Fran ciseo: Eatire unount raised inside of 24 hears: great enthusiasm. C. W. Fulton, Secretary. Th&i tells the story. In less than twenty-four hours after the receipt of Jfr. Huntington's proposition, the city pledged more than the entire uaount asked for, thus complying with every required condition. Astoria has done nobly, It stands ia the front rank of the procession and keeps step to the music of progress. The requirements arc fulfilled. But jrock must not stop. Several who by f&cir wealth and prominence are entitled to representation have not yet been heard from. One hundred thousand more can be raised. It will be needed, and it would not be fair to those whose names are as yet conspicuous by their absence from the list published elsewhere, to leave them out Of course they will want to be included; their holdings will so en bsace in value that it will be good basroess policy for them to aid in the Koolwork. Let all rejoice. This marks a new era for Astoria, and with trausconti aental railroad connection assured, the hopes of Astoria will be realized and our seaport city the terminus of a treat railroad line and the conveying point for the commerce of the north west, will assume the importance that ber position justifies. That terrible north coast claims saotber victim. It has just come to light that the American bark Nellie M ay which sailed from Port Town seal January 23, went to pieces off Cape Flattery in one of the storms that have proved fatal to so many ves sels in that region. Her hapless crew, thirteen in number, perished in tho waves. Most men agree with their political party in large things as a matter of principle, and in small tilings as a matter of convenience. The Sultan of Turkey recently had oaeof his wives tied in a sack and damped in the Bosphoras. She would cat onions. The mayor of Edgerton, Kansas, had a baby boy one day last week. Her name is Mrs. lvellv. A Sjwkane Falls .Sunet. When the sun dropped below the western horizon last evening it left a great bank of Hanie and fire dazzling to behold. In a little while the fire died into gold, and then a rosy splen dor pervaded the west. A little later the refulgence faded away, and the sky was filled with purple and cold grav tones. And all the while a hazy splen- uor uueu uie air. untie cuns ol blue smoke floated above "Poverty Flat" the river went foaming to the sea with a melodious murmur and a muffled roar, and then the darkness fell on plain and mountain, and the shadows or nigut gathered in the darkling woods upon the surrounding hills. The night was here. Spokane Jieciew. Tfcc First Step. Perhaps you are run down, can't eat, cant sleep, can't think, can't do any thing to your satisfaction, and you woRdcr what ails you.
