He then sent to the desk tho usual resolutions of sym pathy, and which provided for the funeral to be in the senate to-morrow. The resolutions were adopted and the senate adjourned. A KAIti: CHAXC'i: To Soon Secure Valuable Laud. SpeciAl toTlIK ASTOWAN.l Wasiiixgtox, May 5. There is every prospect that the Umatilla Indian reservation in Oregon wi)l soon be opened to settlement. The lands were allotted five years ago and a survey of the surplusage of 13.",000 acres was commenced about three years ago. Subsequently it was discovered that many mistakes had been made in the survey, but which have now been nearly corrected. Mr. Herman says that the survey will likely be com pleted within two weeks, and there will then probably be a great rush and the Oklahoma scenes will be repeated. Special to The Astoriax.I Chicago, May 5. At a meeting of the presidents of the western roads to-day, it was agreed that rates must be advanced, and after the views of those present were obtained, it was decided to advance Colorado rates to the old standard May 19th, and. that the present rates should not be cut, and that managers should meet on the 8th inst., for the purpose of forming one or more associations to govern the freight tariff, which is covered by the western freight association ; all divisions and trans Missouri freight associations, aud such other business as may be neces sary to arrange for an early restora tion of rates. The prospects are bright forasettle ment of the rate war. The passenger men will meet to-morrow, aud there will probably be no objections to ad vancing the rates. Extending Their Lines. Special to Tiik Astokiax 1 Duluth, .May 5. - The Duluth and Winnipeg road has increased its capi tal slock, to be paid bv a call for Sl.000,000. It will build to the inter national boundary, without the issu ing of bonds, aud will probably increase its stock again to carry out this plan. The employes of the Sante Fe general offices here, are making a big kick because President Manvel ordered the sum of all in creases in salaries last month refunded to the company, on the grounds that advances were made by officers with out his authority. Atlanta, Ga., May 5.- There Vtis a destructive storm in the southern part of tho state this morning, leveling a large amount of fine timber, and blowing down dwellings. The roof of the hotel at Camilla was blown oil, a number of stores demolished, and sev eral persons badly hurt, but no loss of life is reported. A Favorable Prospect. Special to Tiik ArouiAX. Chicago, May 5.--The terms of settlement agreed upon ny the arbi tration committee of striking carpen ters and new bosses association, was submitted to the carienters this after noon, and after a stormy session, it was ratified by them. A further meeting of the arbitration committee will be held to-morrow, when all the minor details will be settled, and tho strike as far as it concerns the&e two associa tions, will be declared off. Woman Ilurued to Drath. Special to Tiik astokiax Black River Fall?, Wis., May 5. Mrs. .T. T. Smythe, who lived about sixteen miles from here, w:is helping her husband fight forest fires, but the fire became so fierce that she attempted to get away by crawling through a barled wire fence, ller clothes caught in the barbs and she was unable to extricate herself, uutil burned so b.idly that she died in a few hours. At a meeting of the grievance committee of the Union Pacific conductors yesterday, a letter was read from general manager Dickinson, in which he refused the freight conductors demands for extra pay for extra time. The conductors complain that the train conductors west of the Missouri river are making from 250 to 300 miles more tier month, than others receiving the same pay, east of the river. The plan will be to have a committee of four presidents of large New York trust companies make an appraisal of the assets. The stock holders are then to be given the option of taking cash for stock at appraised valned, or of con verting the stock, share for share, into stock of the new finance company. Prac tically, all of the shares will be ex changed for stock of the new com pany as Villard and his friends own three-fourths of the stock. Manv expected Joe MeAuliffe, of California, : and .lack alIon, would meet on their merits, but master of ceremonies McMasters, said MeAuliffe was suffer ing from diptheria, and his physician had ordered him not to appear, bnt rather than disappoint his friends he was on hand. Owing to his illness, three rounds were fought of two minutes duration. No fair estimate of tho man could be man could be made, bnt enough was seen to prove him dangerous for any man to face. FROM FORT CANBY. Do'Liittm of Major Kgan anil the Troojw. The garrison who have been at Fort Canby for about a year departed on Sunday, coming over on the Gen. Canby, and going up to Portland the same night on the steamer li. It. Thompson. They consisted of Major Egan of tho 1st U. S. Artillery and Battery B, of the same regiment, composed of Capt. Merrill, 2nd Licnt. Hayden and 31 non-commissioned officers and pri vates. They are to leave Portland this evening and go by the Southern Pacific railroad to Boseville Junction in California, near Sacramento, where they will arrive on Thursday morning, and meet the balance of tho regiment from San Francisco. Thence tho entire regiment proceeds across the country to Fort Hamilton, on Governors' Island in New York har bor. First Lient. Van Dnsen remained behind in command of Fort Canby with a detachmeut of iufautry soldiers from Vancouver, until relieved by the artillery troops from New York. These consist of two batteries of the Fifth TJ. S. Artillery, who will start westward when relieved by the First U. S. Artillery. On their arrival here Lieutenant Van Dusen will turn over the property and post to them and re join his regiment in New York, while the infantry detachment now at the fort will return to Vancouver. 'The officers and soldiers had made many friends in Ilwaco and this city, and some of the partings were sad, especially as a number of the boys in blue left wives and families here, who will rejoin them a3 soon as arrange ments can be made in their new home. Special to Thk Astoriax.I Helena, Mont., May 5. It is stated to-night that the laborers here will not strike. A delegation from Butte, where the strike is daily increasing in numbers, has been here to-day, but workmen here refuse to join in the labor movement. The effort to make the lowest wages for men, three dol lars per day all over the state, will not succeed, as a large number of the Knights of Labor have expressed an aversion to the general labor move in the state, and the matter creates little interest here iTIontaiia Expresses Her Opinion. McCombs, at a preliminary hearing this afternoon in the justice court was 'bound over to the superior court upon a charge of forger- The amount of McComb's defalcations is not yet known, but will be given out in a few days by account ants. The quiet of the labor situation was broken here this morning by a strike of tho machine wood workers and turners union for nine hours work and ten hours pay. About 135 men went out and were soon followed by 2o0 bench men. The Denver Box & Planing Mill acceded to the demand and is running as usual. The other five mills are idle. The em ployers say they cannot grant the de mand, on account of the Missouri river competition, and will have to close the mills.
