Oxe man knocked another down in the postofiice at Tort Huron, Mich., and was arrested for assault and bat tery, but the court held that :is the offense was committed on United States ground the case must be tried in the United States court. But when the plaintiff went to get United States justice he found the federal courts do not recognize such a petty offense as assault and battery. Before the tariff was levied on plate glass, when all that was sold was im ported, it cost $1 a square foot. One factory was then bnilt in this country xnd asked protection, so a tariff of 20 per cent was levied on plate-glass. According to the free traders "a tariff is a tax, and plate-glass should then have cost SL20 a square fool. But, instead of tliat, the price was soon re duced to 50 cents a square foot. The Boston Herald produces the following problem which is worth considering. Assuming that a com munity of 100,000 workers cau produce in a day. by the labor of ten hours, wealth to tlie value of 300,000, then it their labor is cut down to eight hours a day, they must either work harder or more skillfully in the shorter period, or there will be one fifth less of wealth to divide among those inter ested in its production. There is no way of gelling over this. At the present time the wages earned are paid, and the capitalist receives his returns from the gross sum of produc tion. If this sum is cut down in any way, a loss is inevitable either on the side of the capitalist or wage earner, or on both sides. "While 3 divided among five men will give each 1 apiece, there is no process of arith metic by which SI divided among five men will produce the same result Having leased for a long term of years the corner store of Young's new building on the corner of Third and West Ninth in this city, it becomes necessary for me to move my stock and fixtures from present location, ami to avoid as little trouble and waste of time as pos sible I offer my well selected stock of Men's and Boy's Clothing, Gent's Furn ishing Goods, Hats, Caps, Trunks, Valises, Umbrellas, Blank ets. Settling in this city over six years ago, where I found a very healthy climate and good natural advantages, etc, I concluded three years ago to open business in my line on my own account, with the intention, if possible, to give no one an excuse to take or send money out of Astoria to build up any other city in preference.
