City ami County Ofliclal Paper.
For. the Cist time in the history of
the state Clatsop county elects a state
sonator and two representatives, a fair
apportionment, and it is but justice to
say that to the efforts of state sonator
Gray, in the legislature this result was
largely due.
Tm: settlement of the IMontana con
test gives the Republicans ten major
ity in the senate. Tliis is the broadest
margin -which any party has had
in this body since the forty-fourth con
gicss, which lasted from 1873 to 1877.
In the senate of that congress the Re-
pnblicr.ns had a majority of 13. The
Republican majorities in the senate
in wbsequent congresses were: Three
in tbe forty-fifth, four in the forty
oighth. eight in the forty-niuth and
two in the fiftieth. In the senate of
ttie forh-sL-th congress, which was
the only one controlled by the Dem
ocrats since before the war, that par
ty had a xnnjority of nine, while the
n.t senate was tied between the
parties.
