TnE repeated bursting of the hose last Monday night brings to mind the fact that the sellers ofhoso to the city council guarantee it for four jears and thpt Astoria has never put in a claim for reclamation yet The man ufacturers of fire hose expect to have ssome of it burst and charge accord ingly. It would be a good idea to j-tand upon our contract right in this matter, and have them make good the defective hose. In anv event it is manifest that strong hose, able to stand ordinary pressure should be ready for use. Our efficient fire department Trill find itself badly crippled some day or night, in the hour of utmost need, unless this very important mat ter receives attention. Accokdinq to the latest report re garding the Bearing sea question, the treaty drawn up between the United States and England will recognize that Ixxly of water as closed, in the diplo matic sense, during the four mouths of the sealing period, while being open through the remainder of the jear. Daring the close season it will be un der the solo jurisdiction of the United States. As the adequate protection of the seal is the principal consideration in this controversy with us, this sort of settlement would give complete satis faction to the people. The report may or may not be strictly true, but iu any event the country may i est as sured that Mr. Blaine will not permit its interests to 1k neglected in this matter.
