Cliicnzo an Eay Winner in a Contest of Talk. There vas more fun in the Grand Pacific oflice last night than at a Sioux Falls election. Many prominent Da kotans, together with a few Chicago politicians, helil a sort of experience meeting. Each man tried to tell tke bigge3t lie in the shape or a western experience, ami, strange to say. a Chicagoan won tho prize. SToe'' Bailey, who was the treasurer of Da kota for some time, dealt the lirst Land. "Why, Dakota is a veritable fairy land,' lie ventured, "when compared to other western states. I saw a cy clone in Kansas once which made me feel ashamed of that state. I was go ing to Caldwell nnd rode right inlo the storm. Had to stop at a farm for shelter aud chain my wagon to a stake to keep it in the comity. Was iuviled into the house and ate dinner. We were about half through when the wind freshened, lifted the house from the lloor, and landed it in the next township. Tho settler finished his meal, went to Caldwell, mortgaged his farm, and then moved to Dakota." 'I remember that," broke in Govern or Mellette. "The wind was so fresh that several safes were blown open at Caldwell that night." "That's almost as bad as Montana," volunteered Colonel King, of Eapid City. '"1 was out on Fox Lake last summer pulling in black bass when one oC those Montana blizzards struck us. Temperature fell from SIT above to 10' below in 2.j minutes. Squall came so suddenly that we lost both oars and were helplessly adrift in the cold, vexed lake. Waves higher than Eiflel towers. Boat3 pitched like a peanut shuck in the ocean, and we gave up all hopes of ever reaching shore alive. We were just about to perish when the lake froze up and we walked ashoro on the thick ice." Then Col. Babcock for Chicago be gan. He was so heavily handicapped by the previous spectacular stories that his friends advised him to with draw, but he refused. "Last month," he proceeded, "I was visiting Dokota. I looked at Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Bapid City, Dead wood. Pierre and other famous towns. In each place 1 met a hundred real estate men, yet I couldn't get one to tell me of the wonderful growth of his thriving city and the rare chance for safe investment." At this jar governor Mellette and Mr. Bailey turned pale. 'You Avon it fairly,' exclaimed the governor, and the Colonel led the way out of the oflice into another room. Chitago Tribune.
