Tax openim of Portland's new hotel is $wt cause for congratulation to the ci&cns of our sister city, whose enter prise has made possible so substantial ae indication of metropolitan activity. The new hotel is a splendid advertise memt of and for Portland, and is in erecy way a good investment That was a brave sight yesterday in tie Cosrt street school yard yesterday afternoon. A lino schoolhouse; from rte open doors orderly files of children arching to the music of the drum to plant trees in the yard; from the flag pole on the tower the stars and stripes rang and falling as its folds caught t gloy of tho sunlight; from tbe little throats of tho chil dren a Btrain of melody; tho whole forming fit emblem of our country and the younger and grander army of tfce republic NEW TO-DAY ROSS' OPERA HOUSE ! Forty Six Ilerocs of Two Hemisphere's, led by the King of Minstrels, THE INIMITABLE AND ONLY WILLIS P. SWEATNAM! -And Fat and Fnnny- Tsk platform of tho State Union party adopted at Oregon City last Wednesday appears to be a general damping ground for all the theories, kma, fads and notions that float through the brains of impracticable people. It has some things in it that commend themselves to respectful at-' teation, but thoir strength is dissi pated, their truth discredited by their appearance in such a jumble of crude isMgxninga. If our "Union" party friends -would concentrate their fire thy would do better. Their shot scatters too much. RIOB! Len Somers. Crawford Bros, JJanley & Jar vis. Ilarry McKtsson, W. E. THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL MEET Ing of Columbia River Fishermen's Pro tective Union held at Liberty hall. Tuesday. April loth, 1630. at 7 :30 P. M. FRANK MCGREGOR. Prost. FRED WRIG HT. Secy. Tis trenty-nine years to-day since Bttaapter tras fired on. How far off it all Beams, -when viewed through tho aaae and mist of many years! The tpriainff of the north the march of uIIjoqs; tho shock of conflict; the blood and treasure so freely sacrificed; law four years of fratricidal strife; tho ksfftdy of the nation; the close of tho terrible war. Our piping times of fmoe seem dull and petty compared vith the deeds of those dead days. Fray Heaven that tho American poo Je May never again pass through so ery and trying an ordeal. - i e Iris with pleasure The Astorian lea rair that first-assistant postmaster ajenersl Clarkson is coming out here to take notes on tho way tho post oftee service is administered on tho Pacific coast. Ho will find much to acrest and improve and considerable to co&demn. Clarkson is an old news paper man, and knows tho needs of wspapcrs and their trouble when fke portal service is held back by cast iron rules formulated by officials at fike national capitol who have no con ception of the needs of tho day, or tho deaunds of progress. His visit will jogood. Zxakwixere will bo found a com eaicetxm from a resident, regarding the present status of tho salmon situa tion, which is conservative and timely. In all discussion of this matter it must fee borne in mind that there is no act ex! difference of opinion and no antag- auam between the canners and the fahemen. As a matter of fact, the censers are just as eager to get salmon a the fishermen are to furnish them, and are desirous to pay as high a price aa possible, as a matter of com- petition. Tho whole matter is a ques tteti of competition between Alaska and the Columbia river. The Colum bia river canners are perforce com pelled to pack, but cannot take hold vsleae they see a prospect of at least eoaaing out even at the close of the eeeaon. The question, like all pocket neetions, will regulate itself, the final solankxi resting largely on thedevel- eeenents of tho next few weeks in the aakion market To -Day.
