The master motive of buying and selling is
money. Not because men love lucre, but be
cause money stands for the commodities and nec
essaries of life. We are engaged in business to
make money, not to accumulate, but to enable us
to live. You bur where you can make money by
saving it, for a dollar saved is a dollar earned.
In presenting our claim for your patronage, be
fore saying a word about the excellence or va
riety of our New Stock of Dry Goods, we want
to appeal to this master motive. If we can save
3ou money on 3 our purchases; if it will put
money in your pocket to trade with us, we know
that, other things being equal, we have a strong
presumption that we can win your patronage and
hold it. And it just on this basis that we solicit
vour trade.
So We Enter tie Field lift Flying Colors.
A Fine, Fair and Elegant Stock of
A iiADr contributor to the Oregon-'
fan complains of the prevalent Port
land custom of men there wearing"
lush silk hats and sack coats. Such 1
costume, is, indeed, incongruous.
When a man wears a silk hat a high
sDk hat he should pay due regard to
the social amenities. The careless
grace imparted by a flannel shirt,
loose as to collar, and no coat at all,
is the proper caper for all wearers of
high silk hats. A neglige arrange
ment of the nether trousers as regards
their stuffing inside of the boots is
also a neat part of the tout ensemble.
The lady is right no gentleman will
wear a sack coat and a high silk hat
atthe same time.
Waxia Walia must be a poky
kind of a place. About the time the
telegraph "syndicate'' was formed,
which let in the Salem and Albany
paper, a Pendleton paper, and an
alleged "newspaper" here, the Union
of Walla Walla, concluded to buy $200
worth, and started in with a few dis
patches, the idea being to try it But
a month proved enough for the
Union and though an
old established paper, it had to let go
after a brief period and go back to the
old way. Editor Johnson has hard
work these many years getting out a
even column paper in a three column
town and deserves to have his lot cast
in a more enterprising and apprecia
tive community.
"We sometimes think the experi
ences of a country editor arc often pe
culiar, to say the least," plaintively says
theXontesano Videtlc. "In the matter
of newsgathering he is supposed to be
sot only vigilant in findiug out every
thing that takes place or is contem
plated, but he must exercise the very
bast judgment in the use of expres
sions. His readers are his neighbors
or acquaintances. If Jones is more
frequently mentioned than Brown,
then Brown finds that the paper is
ot of much account If every birth
is not chronicled, every marriage
noted, every time White come3
to town is not mentioned, then
the editor don't possess much en
terprise in gathering news. But if xi
disgraceful fightoccurs, don't mention
it If one neighbor brings suit
against another, don't say anything
about it Of course everybody knows all
about it, but that don't make any dif
ference, In all these things the coun
try and city newspapers differ widely.
The latter go into all the details of
every occurrence no matter of what
nature. The county paper must use
the greatest discrimination, or find
itself in a constant turmoil."
