A paragraph 'with this heading is go ing the rounds of some English and German papers. It refers to the Alsfos "Wood Palp manufactory, Nor way, the balance sheet of which has recently appeared. The value of plant and buildings is 866,500, and on this five per cent is charged ($3,325 per annum). Thestaff consists of a man ager, a bookkeeper, a cashier and sixtv men, and the salaries aro respec tively Sl,12o, S1.000, 900,8200 and S165 yearly. For incidental expenses 82,775 per year is charged, making the annual cost of working 816, 665. The first year's gross profit amounted to 827,775. Of this sum 83,325 went for interest on the capital, and, with the 816,665 working ex penses, it left a balance of S7,750, which, with the exception of 8830 car ried forward, has been- distributed equally between the above-mentioned sixty-three men viz., 8110 to each. Most of the workmen have used the money for buying themselves houses in the neighborhood of the manufac tory. This seems to be neither division earning nor profit-sharing, but a co operation company carried on under very favorable conditions, in a country where labor can bo procured forS165 per annum.
