portion of Squemoque street in the
city of Astoria, Clatsop county, Ore
gon, as laid out and recorded by
.John McClure and extended by Cyrus
OIney. from Main street to its intersec

Speaking of the Astors, lam re
mindetljof a story which has not been
in print, and which is said to have
been vouched for by the late John
Jacob Astor, whose grandfather was
the principal character in the tale.
Just before the war Great Britain
deeded to John andATary Morris Put-J
man comity, ui tins state. When tho
states seceded from the mother coun
try the Morrises adhered to England
and were driven out of the state by
the putriots. Years, after, when the
treaty of peace had been signed, Johu
Jacob Astor appeared on the
scene and notified the state
that he wanted 8500,000 for
Putnam county, which he declared he
had purchased from the heirs of John
and Mary Morris. The state em
ployed Daniel "Webster and other em
inent counsels of the day: but Astor
proved that the land had been deeded
to the Morrises for a life interest, and
at their death was to be turned over
to their heirs, and that the state, when
it'parceled off the land to the farmers,
gave them the life interest only of
John and Mary Morris. Astor won
his case and raised his price, and when
asked how much he would settle for
he said SS0O.C00. He got it- JV. Y.

Xotice is heieby given that the com
mon council of the city of Astoria pro
nose to order the improvement of
water street in the city of Astoria,
Clatsop county,Oregon,f rom its intersec
tion with Squemoque street to the east
side of West Sixth street, by removing
all defective piles, caps anil stringers
and replacing them with new and sound
fir piles, caps and stringers, and by re
planking said portion of said street to
its full width with new and sound fir
planks four inches in thickness, and
by building sidewalks twelvo feet wide
on both sides therof, said improvement
to be made to the established grade of
said street, and at the expense of the
adjacent property.
And unless a remonstrance, signed by
the owners of two-thirds of the property
fronting on said portion of said street,
be filed with the auditor and police
judge within ten days of the final pub-
