THE ORIGINAL -JET PROUTY."
A great deal of fnn is continually
being poked at western courts of
justice, which are generally depicted
as being held in a saloon or in the
open air under a tree, while the judge
and jury are always illiterate, and in
variably conduct the proceedings in de
fiance of law and justice.
The reality is, of course, quite dif
ferent, the western courts, as a rule,
being conducted pretty much the
same as our own. At any rate, the
east has no occasion to throw stones,
if we are to believe the Lewiston, Me.,
JournaFs account of a scene in a
country court-room in that stale:
The trial justice, a big, pompons
otlicial, with a voice like a trombone,
took it upon hiaiseK to examine a wit
ness, a little, withered old man, whose
face was as red and wrinkled as a
smoked herring.
""What is your name'r" susked the jus
tice. "Why, squire," said the astonished
witness, yon know my namo as well
as I know youru."
'Never you mind Avhat I know or
what I don't know,' was the caution
given with magisterial severity. "I
ask the question in my official capac
ity, and you're bound to answer it un
der oath."
With a eoutemptou3 snort the wit
ness gave his name, and the question
ing proceeded. ,
"Where do yon live?"
Wnl, I siinm!'' ejaculated the old
man.
"Win," he continued appealing' tu
the laughing listeners. "I've lived in
thi3 town ail my life, and so's Ik'
pointing to the justice -''and to hear
him go on you would tliink -"
"Silencer' thundered the irate mag
istrate. "Answer my question or I'll fine
you for contempt of court.'
Alarmed by the threat, the witness
named his place of residence, and the
examination went on.
"What is vour occupation?"
"liuh-r"
"What do you do for a living?"
"Oh, git out, Squire! Just as if yon
don't know that I 'tend gardens in the
summer season an saw'wood winters."
"As a private citizen I do know it,
but as the court I know nothing nbont
yon," explained the justice.
"Wal, squire," remarked the puzzled
witness, "If you know somethin out
side the courtroom nn? don't know
nolhin in it you'd belter git out an'
let somebody try this case that's got
boss sense.'
The advice may have been well
meant, but it cost "the witness 10.
