Bat Assurance That ''There Is a Hen Oa." For the first time in a year an As tokiax reporter found yesterday an exact unanimity of statement regard ing the railroad status. Desirous of knowing what was done or about to be dono that he might publish the news, he was told by eleven different railroad officials, in strict confidence that there was a hen on; that nothing had been done, and that there would shortly be a "conference." In the same confidential strain the reporter, imparts the information to the public. Meanwhile there is a -whole lot of folks who are getting impatient, and want to know what all this delay and mvsterv means. They think that it is ! time somebody was getting a move on ana aotngsomcunng. It is time to act, even if only on a suggestion. The onlv fact, to be stated, is that Mr. Smith, of the firm of Hoffman & Smith, yesterday made a proposition to the loard of directors of the Asto ria and South Coast road, to build the road as far as Byrd's. The directors considered the propo sition and expressed a desire to have the proposition extended, so as to com prise the rest of the road from Byrd's to unmes. xuis is tne point now under discussion. It is thought that the matter will receive definite accept ance to-day. The Portland Freie Rresse has a foul article about the sailor boarding house business in Portland and Astoria which demonstrates nothing but that paper's ignorance of the subject which it attempts to discuss. Fish commissioner Beed savs that, so far as he and his colleagues have been able to note, the close season, which ends next Monday, has been Kniversally observed, no fish having been caught during March. Holiness, is tho name of the rasn who died at one o'clock yester day morning; mention of which was naade in yesterday's issue. He was twenty-four years of age. The funeral will be at eight o'clock this morning. L Bergman returned yesterday from Gray's River. The charitable citi seas of that section raised a purse of $240 for the wife and seven children of the late John Schroeder. Such gen erosity speaks well for the good people of Gray's Biver. To-day John Bose and one Edward Gibbons were arrested as accomplices. Tho latter man came here about six months ago and is well known on tho Columbia river among the fishermen. Fonr men are under arrest so far with prospect of other arrests to follow. A brother of Frederickaon's is also sus picioned as the murderer. They were bitter enemies and tho surviving brother, it is said, made threats against his dead brother, and his wife also, all of which point strongly toward him fis a probable culprit. The very air is filled with rumor and one can hear in one hour a hundred stories of confessions, etc. Nothing is reliable beyond what I have written here and these facts aro facts unless man is not to bo believed. Hundreds of people are gathered hero and excitement is high. I hear no talks of lynching. Tho men arrested are only suspected and the evidence is circumstantial. Going north from here is Bruce port to the right about four miles and one milo north of Bruceport and on the north side of the Willapa river is the fine farm of Bose. Joining it on the east is the claim held by Fred rickson. The houses aro about one quarter of a mile apart The coroner held an inquest and the jury fonnd a verdict "came to death bv violence, and gun shot by some one to them unknown. i John Boso and family do not re side on the farm joining the Fredrick son claim. He it is who owns the big tract of land at South Bend, where he resides with his family, excepting his son George Bose, who lived on the old farm attending to the stock, where he was on the fatal February 3rd, when they claim the murder was com mitteed. John Bose will successfully prove an alibi. Bose is wealthy and hitherto one of the most respected men in this county. Mr. Fredrickson was found about forty rods from his home on his own land. The body was found by Prof. Pratt, the ex-singing teacher of As toria, who composed one of the search ing party. Out stepped the watchman and collared the thief. Ho was turned over to con stable Welch, taken before Justice May, duly arraigned and in default of $300 bail was committed to the county jail to appear for examination at ten o'clock this morning. Tho offense constitutes grand lar ceny, and James is liable to secure a residence at tho state hotel for from one year to seven years, as thero is evidently a clear case against him, for ho was seen to steal the cans and they were found on his person. The British ship St. Mildred was reported outside the bar yesterday and wiircome in to-day. Great excite ment still prevails all over tho county regarding the Frederickson murder, for every report received here confirms the popular belief that it was a murder cold-blooded and pre meditated. Five men have been arrested, charged with complicity in the crime. George D. Jones, a barber from As toria, passed through here last night with Hardesty, "Wallihan and others. Jones is tho husoand of a daughter of Mrs. George Bose. His connection with the mysterious "Johnson" is said to bo a very plain one, it being hinted that he and "Johnson" aro one and tho same individual. Hardesty said here that if things turned out as it was probable they would, that thero would be two more arrests. So tho other man arrested is thought here to bo one of the timber men from a Portland law yer's office, who is said to be behind all this. The talk of lynching is no idle threat, and if, as expected, Jack Ed wards confesses, there will be a lynch ing party organized forthwith, for pub lic opmton is thoroughly aroused, ana the feeling in tho vicinity ot tne trag edy is at white heat Tho preliminary examination is being held at Bay Cen ter to-day.
