Chicago carpenters have given no
tice that on and after the 7tli of April
they shall demand 40 cents an hour
and eight hours for a day's work.
What effect this "will have upon the
World's fair can not be predicted.
The fair will of itself make a great de
mand for carpenters aud builders, aud
there will lx a great deal of private
construction, growing out of anticipa
tions of a good demand for buildings.
This is at once encouraging and dis
couraging for the Chicago carpenters.

early days of the gold excitement there.

and unlike mot of them, he kept it
until it has become one or the most
valuable properties in California, jus
may be inferred by the price at which
