OHEGOH: SUNDAY MAKCII 10. 1830 THE BOOMERS IH TROUBLE, Destitntlou aua Safferiug Among The Settlers In OMaloma. WHISKY O.V; DOLI.Ai: A I'JXT. Siccial by Cuiifornhi Associated Pkess. Aukaxsxs Crrr, Ks., March 15.--The boomers were stampeded into the Cherokee strip much the same as the cattle -were stampeded out of it They misconstrued the passage of the Okla homa bill iulo au act providing for the immediate opening of the country to settlement, and each colony of boomers was alarmed lest it should not be first on the ground to select the choicest townsites and claims. The cattlemen were completely routed. Fences have been cut, grass burned, cattle stamj)eded and the range com pletely destroyed, for the near future, at least They will be compelled to get their cattlo together as well as jossiblc and hunt for other pastures. Prof. Copiwill, of the Indian children's school, telegraphed last evening for troops to expel the boomers from the Indian school lands, as many, not knowing its boundaries, had located therein. Saffcrin;; Among the Itoonicrc. Special to Thk Astokia Arkansas Crrr, Ks. March 15. The California Associated Press re porter rode horseback through the Oklahoma boomer's camp last night For nineteen miles south of the Kan Kss line every quarter section has been settled by boomers, mostly single men. Some have families, and present the very picture of poverty. All in the world they had to eat was a little ba con and com bread. In many cases prairie fires have destroyed their fuel, and they were shivering over a hand ful of coals. One boomer said he had given up a lucrative position in the "Winfield, Kansas, flouring mill to take up a claim, and he intended to fight for Ills rights. 'There are lots more like me. too," he asserted. Willow springs was reached and there the depot was found crowded with boomers sleeping on the plat form, while all night long the rum bling of boomers wagons was heard. By to-day it is likely that all claims in the strip will be settled. Xew Town Springing Into Eistcncc. Special to Tin: Astoki an. "WrM.ow Springs, I. T., Mar. 15. Ten ladies have staked good claims, as by the unanimous con sent of the town site boomers, ladies lisve the choice of city lots. A tele gram to Guthrie from Washington says the boomers will be removed. It is reported that soldiers are en route from Fort Leavenworth. A Mushroom City. Special to The Astorian. The men are armed to the teeth and no stranger is permitted near the Astor plot which is located in Trinity county. A Brutal Mate. Special to TnE Astorian.j New York, March 15, Geo. H. Special by Tho California Associated Peess Portland, March 15. Customs House Inspectors Cline and Porter went on board the steamship Geo. W. Elder tliis morning and succeeded in unearthing forty-two five-tael cans of prepared opium, which were confis cated, as they had been smuggled. The Elder has.been under the ban of suspicion some time, as it was believed she was carrying contraband opium to tins port When she came in from the north last night and tied up at tho Ainsworth dock, Inspector F. O. Metz was put on board, as the officer in charge, who noticed that a number of well-known Chinese merchants of this city visited the ship and held consul tations with the cook and other Chi nese servants. His cariosity was aroused to such an extent that he noti fied the collector of customs, who de tailed Messrs. Chne and Porter to make a thorough search of tho vesseL Metz kept a watchful evo on tho movements of the Chinamen and crew, searching all who went ashore, and this morning the detailed officers began work. They first visited the cook's room and hetro found four cans. Believing hetre were more stored awav else where they continued the "search, and in the ice lockers they found sixteen cans. Goinc down in the en gine room, they found among a lot of waste used in cleaning tho machinery, four more cans. Tho officers noticed that the cook was guardincr tho ice locker somewhat jealously and con cluded tnat they had not found all the drug aboard, so they returned there and discovered a second installment of eighteen cans, making forty-two in all. Being satisGed, after further search, that they had secured all the booty, they carried their prize to the customhouse. No arrests have been made but it is very probable that the Chineeo cook will be taken into cus tody. The inspectors exonerate the officers and white men of the crew from all blame as these gentlemen afforded them every possi ble assistance in the search. There is no denying the fact that barrels of opium are being smuggled into the city by Chinese and white violators of law, but so well are their methods sj'stematized that detection in most cases is almost impossible.
