ASTORIA. OEEGON:
SATURDAY.
MAHCH 15. 1690
City an CeuHty Oficlal Paper.
The Canadian senate lias decided
that Canada Las no rise for a mint and
that American gold coinage will an
swer all present purposes.
Tee most prominent "telegram" in
the Columbian's dispatches last
Thursday was one dated "February -aithT
The editor forgot to change
the date to March 12th and the paper
was a s3ent testimony against its com
pilers. A labor agitator who recently went
to Mexico says that cotton mill opera
tives there are little better off than
slaves. He says they work twelve and
fifteen hours a day for $2.80 a week,
and must work at night on Sundays
or holidays if their overseers should
order them to do so.
The McKinley tariff bill proposes
to increase the tariff on tin plate
from 1.1 cents to 2 cents per pound,
thus almost doubling the duty on
every lxx of tin plate brought to As
toria from England to be made up
into can in which to put Columbia
river sahnou. The argument 'of the
promoters of the proposed raise is
that tho United States is the greatest
market for tin ware of all kinds in the
world; that tho tin plate works in
England have increased from 3G7 to
41) in the last five years: that we have
large tin mines nuworked in this coun
try, and if the duty is made suffi
ciently protective the industry of
manufacturing tin plate will ulti
mately be transferred from Englan d
to tliis country, and tho tin plate will
be furnished much cheaper than it is
at the present, or has been at any
peried: that a -start must be made
metinie, and that such a start will
never be made till the duty is raked,
affording sufficient protection to en
courage home protection of this much
n-ed metal.

NEW TO-DAY.
Change of Business.
IJIAVE THIS DAY BOUGHT OUT THE
business of Marion and Bcnnuan. All
bills due up to date will be collected by tho
undersigned. JACOB STKAUSS,
Abtorla, Or., March 14, '30.
The Astoiuan is part and parcel of
the business, political and social life of
this city and section, and it has never
had to resort to any catch-penny
schemes for attracting popular notice.
It has never pretended to be anything
but what it really is, a paper for the
people. Always the same in certain
features, it is ever on the watch to
make such changes and improvements
as may seem desirable, and the
thorough confidence which its readers
have in its business energy and push,
as well as its reliability and
the knowledge of its ad
vertisers of the completeness
with which it covers its natural terri- J
tory of circulation and even extends
to many distant localities, has given its
circulation an exceptional character
for nermanence, imparting at the same
Lby contrast, a touch of grotesque-
spasmodic efforts of other
themselves
of prosperity by
of circulation,
other tricks which are
mg well known to the wary ad
vertiser. The circulation of The
AsToiuAX is greater to-day than ever
before and the greatest by far of any
newspaper published on the Columbia
river, and, as a thoroughly represen
tative newspaper, reflecting tho busi
ness life, the vital interests of its com
munity, and fully satisfying the wants
of its readers in every line of endeavor,
it may honestly claim that there is no
other newspaper which so fully covers
its own peculiar territory, while at the
wane time commanding an extensive
circulation abroad as well as at home.
