C) She gattjf toratt. ASTORIA. OREGON: FKIDAY MAKCII 7. 1890 City ami Comity Official Paper. STILL HEXDACIOUS. The Columbian still insults the in telligence of both its readers by con tianal falsehood relative to tins mat tor of press dispatches. The Astokian has compelled it to tacitly take back some of its assump tions, bnt tbat mendacious sheet still deals in falsehood, which, indeed, seems to be its only stock in trade. In a characteristic editorial it yester ubv Hods out more lies which will be promptly exposed by this paper. lae number one is that The Asto- iuan applied to the "Western Union for a press report. In this the Colum titi.H is relating some of its own ama teur oxicrieiicc. The Astokian cut its eye teeth long ago. lionumber two is that Hie California Associated press is a weak concern. Tlmt organization was established in 1S.1D, it supplies some of the best pa pars iu the country, and is ahead of its rivals. Of course it cost more to eenreits frmichu-e, the Columbian conlun : touch it, but then that is no nmR why that sheet should so Immdessly lie :ilout the matter. lae number three is that anything ia the Astowax office is stolen. In tWs regard the Columbian can't help taltnug about its own system which, a? oowree is onh natural. ne admirable report that The Aspoiuax gets even night, is paid for al Higher price than the Columbian emu afford. Isie number four is that if the Co Inmitwn were to suspend, the tcle grujih oflice would close at eight oxsfock. Not much. The life or lwt4t of the C'tlumbian, has no more efiect on the time the Astoria tele ssTiph office opens or closes than it bus on the Tide in the Columbia river. As fully siiown heretofore, The As toiuax's associated press franchise is u extensive one. exclusive and per manent. The AsTonrAX pays no more ationtion to the antics of whatever ophomoral sheets start or stop, than it docs to the sport of summer Hies. Meanwhile, the proof is plain and easy. The Atoria public is asked to compare. Look at the two reports. Tin; Asto wax's set solid, of good qual ity and more of it: the Columbians weak. leaded out to make a show, and some of it never received by wire but fixed up in the Columbian office, all same Pioiutr. "Were it necessary, Tim Astokiax could cuter into this wibject at greater length, and show up some of the dirty little tricks attempt ed b thoe folks. But we hn chore confined our re marks to a brief showing of the Co lumbian's falsehoods, and the animus that prompts thoe silly falsehoods with which the hope to prop their cause. It may le difficult for the Colum bian to realize that purely as a matter of business, apart from any principle of right, it i better for it to tell the truth. Its renders (both of them) will agree with us that lias only stand till ex loed. ami for an alleged newspaper to m gmssh tamper with the truth, is an iaull to the audience it desires to address. The real estate sales recorded to date this year, foot up over $900,000. Sales not yet recorded will, it is be lieved, make the aggregate of real es tate transfers in Astoria for the first 05 days of 1S90 about $1,000,000. One View of It. At the citizens meeting last night it was decided to accept the proposition of Hunt to raise two million dollars IkuhI for him to build his railroad frora Hunt's station in eastern Oregon to tliis city, a distance of two hundred raid twenty miles. William S. Ladd agreed that if the Ixmds were raised lie would head the list with S300,000. Mr. Hunt wanted to know if the road should stop at Portland, or should it be extended to Gray's harbor, Astoria and the Sound. He said it was his intention to get the long haul of what was now made In the Northern Pacific from Eastern Oregon and Washing ton. Extending the road to Astoria, Gray's harbor and the Sound may be a good scheme, but it would strike the avorage person that with the road to these t-caports, much of what Mr. Hunt expects to haul to Portland ill find its way to these other points and never see Portland. It will be like the Northern Pacific making Portland ts terminus and then moting it to Taoonia and building the switchback and leaving Portland a way station. Portland JZxaminer, ..
