ASTORIA. OREGON
SATURDAY .
-MA1JCI1 1. 1890
City and County Official Paper.
Regarding the coming Republi
can state nominations The Astobian
believes that the matter of selection
can be safeb. left to the delegation !
who Trill compose the state conven-
tion. I
A2rw Jersey inventor proposes to '
nse the ilyiianio in -warfare to make ,
artificial lightning, lie claims to be
able to produce a flash of lightning!
which he can direct against a boy of I
men a mile jrxn. !
The real estate transactions in this ,
county for the first two months of 1S90 1
foot up over SSG0.000 as recorded, and
as safe to say that sales to the amount
of $159,000 additional have been made,
the deeds for which have not yet been
placed on record.
Tnr annual production of eggs in
in this country equals in money value
the country's annual production of
iron. The eggs arc eaten as fast as
produced, while the iron stays by tho
owners and is subject to taxation as it
accomulates from year to vear.
AiiTMrsTUii (99 per cent pure) is
now quoted at $1 a pound. It is not
very long since it was 11. Just what
it costs to make has not yet been dis
closed, but tbere is reason to believe
that if the price should run down to
SI there would still be a manufac
turer's profit.
A xrw system of telegraph has a
Rending instrument with ten keys,
each of which makes one of the
straight or curved lines used in Ro
man letters. It is claimed to have
sent a seventy -si word message in
twenty-five seconds and printed them
in plain Roman characters.
Aboct 2,503 words arc all that are
used in ordinary talking and conversa
tion, although there arc some 20,000
words in the English language. Diff
erent authors vary in the number of
the words they ne, but the difference
is but slight Shakspere found -i.OOD
words sufficient for all his works.
The Russian government, it is said,
will begin next spring to build its
1,500 mile railroad across Siberia. It
is a big undertaking, and the estima
ted cost is 8220,000.000. This is an age
when the cost of -any project, however
enormous it may be. provided it gives
promise of a reasonable profit is no
longer considered an obstacle.
It must cost the proprietors of the I
Anacortes town site a big lot of mon-
cy for advertising. The Oregonian j School Meeting Notice.
has paid specials from there every mHE annual meeting or THE LK--,

Gov. Ferry has vetoed the Powers
medical bill which passed the Wash;
ington legislature. By doing this he
has vrou the congratulations and good
will of all the prominent papers of
that stale. The press, always ready to
oppose or divulge anything that is
false or a sham, -were unanimous iiii5'- ,?M J'V, '"''l!"". J.1!". ,U.ny." on, !in?
condemning this bill It -was passed
by a legislature "which seldom stops to
think what it is doing, so the only hope
was in the action of a wise and trusted
governor. He did not disappoint this
confidence.
"Don't snub the reporter," says the
Boston JlerahL Tlie reporter is not
apt to be snubbed. Very few can af
ford to snub him. It is churned says
the Tacoma ITcics, that a union gen
eral, who had a great career before
him, lost all chance of fame by un
wittingly insulting a newspaper man,
whereupon the rest agreed never to
mention that gentleman's name in
their reports, and the unfortunate
man dropped out of sight The Her
ald pleads for the reporter. The man
who docs the snubbiug is tho person
who should be sympathized with.
Californta with all her claim3 of a
beautiful climate and xmmcasured re
sources cannot keep the tide of immi
gration from flowing into Oregon and
Washington. California has one con
dition of affairs which hurts her
chances lor immigration. So large a
per cent of tlie agricultural land is
held by wealthy property owners thai
it is almost impossible for a farmer of
ordinary means to get possession of a
ranch in his own name. There is u
state of affairs there somewhat similar
to what is true in England. The pop
ulation can never increase rapidly
when tenants and not owners prevail
throughout the commonwealth. Here
is where Washington and Oregon are
strong and they should never lose this
advantage
Every grand jury regularly reports
favorably on the proposition to build
a new jail and court house. It does
seem as though the county ought to
have something lo show for all the
taxes annually paid. Whether a new
court house is built or not, some ar
rangement must be luade for the new
office of recorder, including a vault
The present office of the county clerk
is too small for tho volume of business
which bids fair to increase, rather than
diminish. There is no place at pres
ent for the county treasurer; the sher
iff has room enough; so have both tho
county and circuit courts. As for the
jail: that is in direct contravention
vith the constitution of the state
which prohibits cruel and uuusual
paiehment
