Oxe result of this year's census eboold bo the securing of an additional representative in congress from this state. 'I oouLD preach a whole sermon," said Dr. Talmage recently, "on the everlasting blessing of a good nevrs papec. A good newspaper is the grandest temporary blessing that God has giveu to the -people of the United States." The Chemical bank of New York declares a dividend of 25 per cent monthly, or 300 per cent annually. The par value is S100 per share. Capital, 8300,000. Surplus 0,052,900. The last sale of stock brought $4,500 per share. Ip Christopher Calumbus had only had the foresight to postpone his dis covery one year, it would have been possible to celebrate the four hun drcth anniversary without interfering with the delights and excitements of a presidential campaign. TnEPosen Courier intimates that Germany is ready for war at any mo ment, and that 1,100,000 men could bo massed on the frontier in one day, at points already selected, and within an other week 800,000 men would form a second line. "What Germany seems to need is some one to bring on the enemy. There is a "prophet" on the Is land of Java who has been paid S100 per year for the past thirteen years "to not predict a tidal wave which will sweep clear over the island." The natives believe that he has to only predict to set a wave in motion. If any body has a softer snap, let him be heard from. Aftee they had jailed a tramp in Indiana as "poor, friendless and hav ing no home," he invited the sheriff to dinner, sent out a hundred dollar bill to buy champagne and turkey, and asked him to take charge of $2,600 he had been carrying in his bootleg. They managed to get that jail door open back to the jamb as he walked out The statistics showing that the cost of producing the Illinois com crop of 18S9 was $03,000,000, while its market value is only 58,000,000, are amply estimates, and so may bo con siderably out of the way; but there can bo no doubt that the raising of corn has become unprofitable in Illinois and all the other western states. buildings. If we do not get these aids now, wo will not be obliged to wait many years. The tremendous importance and growth of this section will absolutely compel them, while our representation will be greater in congress and our influence thus increased. S. S. "Watermak, a Calaveras coanty, CeL, newspaper man is dead, aged 35. Ho was paralyzed in hands, feet and lungs, couldn't walk, had to hold his pen or pencil between his teeth and write that way, could hardly talk loud enough for anyone to un derstand him, yet, though so heavily handicapped, his mental powers kept hha up till nature succumbed in the unequal straggle. AiirLti providing for the selection of townsites in Alaska has been passed by congress. It provides for the pur chase of 1G0 acres of land as nearly as practicable in a square form for townsites at $2.50 per acre. They zaay then be divided into town lots and incorporated as a town, either personally or in connection with any incorporation which may bo formed. The bill was amended to exclude lands occupied by natives, mineral Jands, such lands as the fish commis sioner may select, Kodiac or Afoquak islands, for the purpose of fish culture, and also Fribylov island. Thk Milton JEayle, in its editoral notes, among other things, prints the follewing: TValla Walla is arranging for extensive advertising in divers magazines and newspapers, the pro ject to be carried out when spring opens. If the board of trade of that city had the acumen of a superannuated paokmule, thoy would recognize a store potent medium in the home papers, and decorate their plumes with s healthy tint "While the wistful wail e the home paper is echoing through s wide circle of exchanges, the espen Jitare of money on outside barn-storm-smffisakHply a useless and wasteful evtky. Har- lisaprsscBMot, rivers must citia tstast hare public If attracting unusual attention speaks well for the new states, they certainly ought toachieve a creditable reputation. But we fear for the con trary. With a heavy indebtedness in North Dakota, runaway legislators in Montana, a nondescript assembly in Washington, and a crowd of land boomers in South Dakota, surely con ditions have combined to give these states a questionable notoriety. The' seem to be making up for lost time, or rather they are, as in the case of the Washington legislature, losing time which they can never make up. It is the same old story of youth and inex perience. When another generation has passed away these amusing inci dents of the present will serve as an invaluable source for tile stories of the future. Packers and dealers still are discussing the prospect for the new season, and there seems to be some division of opinion among them. The majority hold to the belief that the season promises well for the industry in all its branches; but there are a few who make the prediction that the new cannery companies and their fishermen will crowd tho streams to tho damage of the industry generally, if it does not precipitate troubles among the fishermen such as were ex perienced some seasons since on the Columbia river, when one man fished and the other held the rifle. It wonld be better for the packers to arrange these matters beforehand if possible It is not right to arm men and send them out with instructions to protect themselves. It is more than likely that there will be conflicts between the old fishermen and the new on all streams. There will not bo fish enough for all, and the old timers, quite naturally perhaps, will put in some claims of right to fish tho streams. The new comers will claim that the birds in the air and the fLsh in the sea, in a state of nature, belong to those who can take them. The old timers will retort with, why don't you take them? This will be the signal for a row. Somebody will get hurt and nobody will get any salmon. To make a long story short, there will not be a large supply of salmon on any of the streams this coming sea son if experience is any guide. Tho Sacramento and Columbia rivers are making lighter and lighter packs every year. Alaska is the main dependence of the packers. Many of the new com panies will pack in Alaska, but in all probability one season in tho frozen north will knock all tho enterprise and ambition out of them, and they will leave salmon packing to the companies that have made a business of it for years. Two Pair at a Birth. ir a ScoTTDtt,r, Pa., Feb. 13. Mrs. Michael Newton of Everson this morn ing gave birth to four perfectly formed baby girls. Mrs. Newiou is rather a large wo man, good looking and 3S years old, and had eight children before she gave birth to those to-day. Many visitors thronged the house all day, and the Newtons were the recip ients of a large number of presents, including five and ten dollar notes. When papa Newton got his first view of his wife and babies ho threw up his hands and shouted, "Holy Moses, what a pile of kids!" Ho gradually became calm, and at last ac counts was doing quite well. Tho children are as much alike as four peas, and their weight is about four and a halt pounds each. They arc remarkably healthy and take nourishment at regular hours. Wonderful Results Results often follow tho use of Hood's Sarsaparilla. Setcro cases of scrofula, upon which other prep arations have been powerless, yield to tho peculiar curative powers of this medicine. Distressing cases of dyspepsia, excruciat ing complaints of the kidneys and liver, agonizing itch and pain of salt rheum, disagree able cases of catarrh, and aches and pains of rheumatism, are cured by Hood's Sar saparilla. It purifies the blood, and at tho same time tones the stomach, creates an appetite, and ghes strength to ecry func tion of the body. Give it a trial. General Debility "For four years my wife suffered with large tumor bunches on the glands under the arms, and general debility of the wholo system. She became so poor in health that wo were on tho verge of despair regarding her recovery. Physicians did not seem to understand her case; at all events sho never derived any benefit fronj their treatment. She finally concluded tc try Hood's Sarsaparilla. The Immedlato effect was so marked and satisfactory that she continued to take it, and this Is tho result: She has gained In weight From 84 to III Pounds and is stronger and in better health than she has been for years. The bunches under her arms have diminished, and we belloo Ilood's Sarsaparilla will be too much for them in time." J. J. Noncnoss, 226 Com mercial Street, Boston, Mass.
