Trip To the Nehalem.
Astoiua, Feb. 14, '90.
Editor Asteiuan:
I have just returned from a trip to 4
the Nelialem country. There were'
five of us in the party; Geo. Herren,
H. Ford, liobert Turley, C. F. Cald
well and Captain spencer, leaving
Astoria January 11th, on the steamer
City of Astoria, mnking Wood's land
ing the same day we stopped over
night there and prepared for our
journey over the mountains, a distance
of 11 miles. After eight hours of hard
walking through snow three feet deep
we got to the city of Mist. Mist is lo
cated on the bank of the Nehalem riv
er nnd has about 100 inhabitants, with
a fine level country surrounding it.
There we got ready, building our boat
for a ride down the river. After two
days work we had our boat ready to
sail. Loading in Tour supplies, about
1000 lbs, we seated ourselves, shoved
our boat off to face the mad rushing
stream of the Nehalem a distance of
28 miles. After two days ride taking
in the scenery along the banks of the
river and its tributaries our little boat
brought us to our destination. The
boys were complaining of having the
la grippe, but they came to the con
clusion it was from trying to see tue
tops of some of that tall timber that
grows along the. river and suround
ings. We stopped at Mishawaka for
three weeks doing what work we could
on our claims, but the snow bothered
us some so wo prepared to take-up our
homeward march, making it in two
days. It made me think of the gold
excitement in '49. The people on the
Nehalem are all living in the hope of
seeing the railroad coming through
and from the looks of the work done
along the line they will have a road
before long.
