c Sftc gaUtj storimt. ASTORIA. OREGON: SCXDJLY. .rEDKUARi 1C, 1630 Ciljr" County Oflicial Paper. .4.Y IMPORTANT ESSENTIAL. The advantage ot -worldug logctbcr for the good of the town cannot be overestimated. Astoria needs more hannonr or action among its citizens than exists. It is the prime element o! success, for combined forces can ac complish almost anything. Any man wrho doubts this can look over the list of progressive cities and see the state ment proved. On the contrary there arc numerous towns that have been kept in the rear and al wrays will be kept there, unless feuds are buried. Places that might have become great centers of popula tion are languishing, while their pnb lic spirited neighbors have forged ahead. It is the pride of Seattle and Spokane that the consideration of the city's growth came first, then per sonal advancement. "Whenever a corporation or com pany tries to put in a substantial plant of any nature that will benefit the city as a whole, it is the worst kind of policy to obstruct it because some interests are not specially aided. Such a spirit is not loyal and acts like sand in delicate machinery. Astoria must grow, but she will grow fifty per cent, faster it new enterprises receive a hearty supjort. It is all right to stop movements which have not the stamp of good faith on them or which cannot give snfiicicnt evidence that they will go ahead. These plans cannot be too carefully watched, whether it is a rail road, a cable line, a motor system, a hotel, or a manufactory, if yroper vouchers are given, no private consid eration should be cnnitled to stop it Mea who lmve traveled much say: UI have 1m?cu ia nearly all of the large cities or this country, and it is mi indisputable fact that har mony of spirit ami action have done more to put these places in the van than any other influence. I mean this, that such combination has worked to advertise the city, to bring railroads, to invite capital, to give manufacturers land and other induce ments, to grant judicious franchises, and, in short, to compel the city to grow. Men must not try to make too much money when a town is begin ning. "Wait until it is positively start ed on a prosierons course and then reap an honest earning.' AcoiuiEsroxDnNT of the JVorf Incest-; crn Jlailroatier advances some odd theories to account for the frequency and severity of storms in modern times. lie gives the figures to prove that thesv arc now over 30.000 locomotives in iciual use in the United States, be cause the hundreds of thousands of stationary engines of all kinds and sizes. From a round 30,000 locomo tives he estimates :is much as 53,000, (XKX.0D3 cubic yards of vapor each week. 7.000.030.000 cubic yards a day, all to be relumed as rain -"quite cnouch." he says, "to produce a good rain-storm every twenty-four hours." He estimates other engines of all de scriptions at probably 1SO,000 proba bly a very low estimate and con cludes that these, with the locomo tives, send about 170.000,000,003 yards of vapor into the air every seven days. Is it not enough," he says, 4'to give ns floods of terror?' Hundreds of gas wells sending their poison into the atmesphere: millions of cesspools and sewers. "Would it be any wonder if some blighting plague would lay watc the land? MARINE NEWS A3II) NOTES. The British $hip Hiter.sule cleared for Dnbliu, Ireland, yesterday. She carries 29.010 bbls. He had been employed in the saw mill at that place and had charge of the pony saw. At the time of his death, he was as sisting in getting a cant from the main saw to the pony saw.
