He devoured all tbe food that was placed before him with apparently great relish, and when tbe meal was concluded com menced to sing and give imitations of nctors and singers in the Chinese the aters. When the Mibjecl of tbe coming or deal was mentioned be laughed and said that he was not afraid to die. Then he asked for a pencil and a piece of iaper and drew sketches of several leions in tbe cell, and laughed hea-ti-1 as he examined tbe result of bis ef forts About 10 o'clock Hing was haved and given a bath at his own request. He was then presented with a new suit of Chinese clothes which j-eemed to delight him greatly. He said the new clothes made him look -heap high toned. But the minute be discovered that the deputy sheriff had neglected to provide him with a new hat he insisted that he must have one with a big red bead on top and declared that he must have a new one "too high toned for an old hat; get him. or no hang." A new hat w;is ac cordingly given him and a new skull cap and he then sat on the bench in the cell contemplating his improved tcrsonal apiearaucc and chatting and laughing gaily as though be did not seem to be entirely satislied with the new hat and he said "Heep good all but hat, him high biuder. No like high binder." A huge crowd or Chinese and Cau casians had collected outside by this time and a squad of olice were sta tioned in front of the jail. At 11:30 the death warrant was read to Hing who interrupted the proceedings laughing. He looked uion the whole affair as a huge joke. At noon he was taken out and walked up the scaffold uaiUuclungly. The expression on his face as tbe black cap was adjusted was one of interest. At 12:02 the drop w;is sprung and death was instantaneous. San Frxnrhco's Dentil IUtr. San Francisco. Feb. 1-L- For the five days p;ist there has been 101 deaths. The rate is slightly above tbe ordinary mortuary reports. The number or dcatlis has leen decresising steadily for a week, indicating the decadence of la grippe. There have been forty-five deaths from lung trouble since Fridav. A Conrlct to lie Pardoned. SanFiuncisco, Feb. 1L -The peti tion has leen signed by a number of judges and prominent officials, asking governor Waterman to pardon John Drennon. one of tbe young men con victed of tbe highway robbery of a young man in Oakland hist' May. The condition stated in the petition is that the prisoner shall re main out of tbe shite for two years. Drennon was tried by jury and sen tenced to states prison for two years. A wealthy relative living iu Oregon has written a letter agreeiug to take charge of him and give him a home, and endeavor to reform him. Frank Upton Comin?. San Fkancisco, Feb. 11 Frank Upton, the appraiser of customs at Koke, Japan, for tbe Japanese govern ment, and who has lived many years in that country, arrived here on the last steamer. He will probably visit Oregon and Washington. Vcvsel Wrecked. Victoria, B. C, Feb. 1-L News has been received that a lumber laden ship had gone to pieces, on Vargas island near the entrance to Clayoquot sound. The crew were all lost, but the numler is unknown. Tito Union Pacific Extension. Fort Tov-xsen-1), Wash., Feb. 13. Definite news has been received that the Union Pacific railroad company would commence construction of a standard gauge road between this city and Portland within sixty days. Port Townsend citizens are joyful and property is rapidly advancing in val ue. The Oregon Improvement com pany will send several gangs of labor ers to commence work early next month. Twenty-five miles of road, fnniislied with rolling stock, must be constructed before next July, or the company will forfeit a property dona tion valued at over halt a million dol lars, iu addition to S100,000 cash. - J. HhrscV Second Divorce Proceeding. San Francisco, Feb. 13. - Joseph Hume, of Berkeley, a large owner in lmon canneries on the Columbia j river, lias been divorced from his wife, $125 AND $150 PER LOT. ROBB & PAEKER, General Ag'te, Astoria. Mrs. Lizzie K. Hume, for the second time. The Humes have been married for a number of years, and have sev eral children. About eight montlis ago they were quietly divorced at Martinez, Hume settling a handsome sum and the family residence on his wife. They remained apart for a couple of months, but were again united in marriage, having settled their differences. The wife obtained the decree of divorce in the first in stance. Mrs. Hume a few weeks ago went on a pleasure trip east Upon her re turn a coldness sprang up and they again separated. Hume then insti tuted divorce proceedings on the ground of extreme cruelty against his wife at Martinez about a month ago, Mrs. Hume making no defense, and a decree has just been rendered. Hume purchased the homestead of his wife and is at present residing there with the children. That Terrilile North Coat. Victoria, Feb. 13. -News was re ceived to-day from the west coast of Vancouver inland that a lumber laden ship had gone to pieces on Vargas island, at the entrance to Clayoquot sound, and all the crew lost The In dians report the coast in the vicinity of the wreck strewn with lumber, and one of the masts of the vessel, with a mass of cordage, floating over the reef where the vessel sank. Nothing was found to indicate the name of the ves sel or where from, except one small arlicie, which may lead to the identi fication of the ship. The Indians picked up a leather pouch, such as is commonly worn by sailors, and which contained letters and discharges of one Peterson, of Abo, Finland. When informant left Clayoquot no bodies had come ashore. The letters and other papers are now in the possession of the Catholic priest at Clayoquot tSeiiicmbcr Tlii.. There were not more than two dozen members present when the house met in contin uation of Thursday's session. Stewart and Barnes, of Georgia and O'Bielly, of Pennsylvania entered an em phatic protest against the adoption of the proposed code and the action of tbe speaker. Reed was defended by Barnes of New York, Thnrsday. The session was then ended and the session of Friday opened. The "journal was approved, the speaker counting a quorum as present The committee on the world's fair submitted a report which was ordered printed and recommended. Site of the World's Fair. Washington, Feb. 1 1. The house committee to which various world's fair bills were referred completed its report this morning. It says that it found it impracticable to rcort ono bill to cover all the questions and submitted two substitute bills on the question of selection of a site for the world's fair of 1S92. The committee oners a reso lution to the effect that at the close of the debate on bills the house shall be gin voting on tbe site and continue until ono is selected. Adding to the Slajurity. Washington, Feb. 1-L The Star says a sensation in naval circles will develop when tbe "United States steamer Enterprise arrives from Europe. She is commanded by H. B. McCalla. It is said that upwards of seventy men deserted, owing to the commander's harshness. Two men arc now in irons who will be court martialed. The entire combination wa.s arrest ed on a charge of murder. It is sup posed that James's neck was broken. One doctor says it was paralysis or the head. An Enormous Plate Bender. Hamilton, Ont, Feb. It The Miles Tool works at Hamilton have been finished, and are now loading an immense armor plate bender, to bo sent to the navy yard at Mare island. The tremendous machine weighs 400, 000 ponnds, and the freight will bo something over 810,000. A number of special Hat airs have been built for the express purpose of transportation of this load, and the whole tram will be run through to the coast as a special. It is the largest single ship ment and the finest machine that ever left Hamilton, wheresome magnificent machinery is built. The I'arnellTIineR Comrnlmlon. Lontjon, Feb. 14. The bride and bridegroom and ten others were drowned. The Sultan Died from Sunstroke. Zanzibar, Feb. 14. Everything is quiet No trouble has arisen in con sequence of the death of the sultan. Khalifa Ben Said, or the accession of his brother Saniaid Ali. Two British gunboats have arrived from Shanghai. A British sloop or war sailed for Mombassa to ensurothe preservation of order. Mombassa is picketed with native soldiers, and precautions arc taken to protect the mission stations of that vicinity. Trains Cettiaa- Troath. -The Southern Pacific Railway com pany is now running trains on regular time between Aurora and Koseburg. The point of new trouble is at Aber nathy's trestle, a short distance north of Oregon City. A largo force of men are at work there and it is believed that by Sunday a south bound train can start out of Portland. Teltgraph Line M faded. Capt. "Whitolaw has raised all but about ono hundred and fifty feet of the Pacific Postal Telegraph com pany's cable about Duniway's wharf, on the east side. The cablo lies un der the wreck of some vessel which must have been sunk many years ago. No one knows anything about tbo wreck. A Report Denied. The report telegraphed from Port Townsend that the Union Pacific rail way company would, within the next sixty days begin the construction of a line from that city to Portland is pro nounced to bo unreliable by repre sentatives of the company here. Outlook for SoHthtra Orecon. A prominent business man hero is in receipt of a letter from Josephine county which says that the damage to property, with the exception of a few bridges, is very light, and fruit and farm interests have not suffered from heavy rains. No loss of life has been reported in that locality. On the other hand the increased snow fall and rain have proved an indirect blessing as they open thou sands of-acres of new placer mines. The writer estimates from 5,000 to 1000 men 'will bo engaged in mining in Josephine county during the com ing summer. He says that old miners predict that this will bo the greatest mining year over experienced in south ern 'Oregon. He believes the gold output will reach $2,000,000. Wants to Fight. Frank Glover, a Chicago heavy weight who fought Joo McAulifle, Choynski and others in San Francisco and who, Joo Choynski says, can stand more punishment than most men, telegraphs that he is ready to meet any man in Oregon in a glove contest, Dave Campbell preferred.
