() She gattjj historian. ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY l'EBnOAY 9 1890 City ami County Ofiicial Paper. DIRECT HAIL SERVICE. The Astorxan thinks that Astoria should have direct mail connection with San Francisco by steamer. Un der usual conditions, letters mailed in San Francisco could reach here 40 boars afterward. The delays in the railroad mail ser vice arc always vexatious, and when prolonged result in serious loss. It is now some years since the steamer mail service was discontin ued. The railroad has been given a fair trial, and has proved unsatis factory. "We. of Astoria, are thus isolated, when, by reason of our jKition we onjrht to have bettor San Fraucisco mail facilities than any other point in Oregon or Washington. Hence Tan Astokian suggests that a move be made in the matter; that a memorial setting forth the exact facts. be prepared, signed by evory man of prominence m this section, and for warded to the iostnl department at "Washington, I). C. ANOTHER EFFORT. A move is on Toot to lessen the pres tige of Astoria as a commercial iorl. Effort is making to have the clear ances from the custom house here not recognized in thcstalislics for the port, whenever the bulk of the cargo is loaded at Portland. That is, if a ves sel load 20.000 bbls Hour, 11,000 at Portland and 0.000 at Astoria, she is to lc reckoned as having loaded at and cleared from Portland, and no ac count is to be taken of her having loaded at or cleared from Astoria. Such an effort was made a few years ago, but its manifest un justness de feated the move. Serious effort is now in progress to have such ruling made, but it is be lieved that proper representation of the facts in the case will again defeat so palpable and prejudicial a discrim ination, Eaxt advertisers do not under stand why custom cannot be directly traced to the source where they ex pend their money to obtain it. Uusi ncss is like a river with many tribu taries, and in which it is impossible to trace every individual drop of water to the spring from whence it came. Temporary advertisements in a small way will not produce an im mediate or permanent increase of business, any more than a light shower will affect the depth of water in a well. Two Kazles ami a Soa Cull. The passengers on the Telephone were the witnesses last Friday, of a novel conflict. When approaching Calhlamet, their attention was attracted by two eagles with wings outspread, eyes blazing and angry lxnks. chasing a lone sea gnlL The eagles doubled on the gull, and could ily faster, but the screaming sea bird was more dextrous in dodging, and was able to elude its pursuers. But it was exhausted, and as the steamer rushed by. the bird in desper ation dashed onto the pilot house, still pursued by the eagles. Capt Scott gave the whistle two vigorous toots : the feathered monarchs of the mountain crag, startled by the sound, went shrieking shoreward, while the sea gull perched on the pilot house, rode in triumph to Skamokawa. Out of Jhe Fire Tormented ictth Salt Kheum- Cured by Hood's Sarsaparllla. Only those who have suffered from salt rheum in Its worst form know the agonies caused by this disease. Hood's Sarsapa rilla has had great success in curing salt rheum, and all affections ol the blood. " I owe the gratitude to Hood's Sarsapa rilla that one would to his rescuer from a Burning BuildingJ with 6alt rheum, and had to leave off work altogether. My lace, about the eyes, would be swollen and scabbed, my hands and a part ot my body would bo raw sores for weeks at a time, my flesh would seem so rotted that I could roll pieces from between my fingers as large as a pea. One physician called it type pftcrm and gave me medicine accord- VJIoUIl ingly; but salt rheum cannot be cured in that way. Finally I bought a bottle ol Hood's Sarsaparllla. It helped me so much that I took two more bottles, and was Entirely Cured LM r It u salt rheum since. I also used Hood's Olive Ointment on the places affected. It stops the burning and itching sensation im mediately. I will recommend Hood's Sar saparilla not only for salt rheum, but for SS Loss of Appetite 'all-gone feeling so often experienced." A. D. ASTONISHING CUBES TEI0ITY. BY ELE0- The Prevalence of Catarrh and Deafness, And Its Effects on the System. The Poor Treated Pree of Charge. In Portland and the whole north ycsr, the catarrhal and bronchial affec tions are alarmingly prevalent, and too frequently they are neglected until the most serious consequences ensue. Nothing seems more common than a cold or sore throat, and vet thev each frequently lead to years of snlfering, resulting in consumption and death, if not properly attended to in time. Deafness is another distressing af Hiclion often induced by catarrh. That Drs. Darrin have effected extraordi nary cures after all efforts elsewhere have failed, is a fact supported by the strongest evidence. Their enrcs, more over, are rapid and permanent, as the following very remarkable cases show. The lk'v. L M. 13ashor is a man well known in Oregon, aud his word can be relied on. Card From Ilev. Some ot them are engaged in oilice work, such as making maps ol the road, plans of bridges, estimates of cost or grade, etc He informs us that about fonday they will begin at the summit aud work "towards Yeraonia. At the present rate ot the drcippenr ace of the snow he expects little dif ficHlly on that accouut by that time. In abemt two or three weeks "Mr. Hob ins says he expects the whole survey from Astoria to Hiltaboro will be com pleted. He does not anticipate that t&crc ever will be any difliculty from sow blockades on the lino ot the rail ysy. At all events, had the line been m running order during this storm, Ike trains would not have been de taiacd. Onltcingnskcd whether there wouldn't be obstructions from falling trees, rr. Hobinm replied that they "woHld clear the right of way (100 feet uride), and beyond that they must, of course, take their chances or having as occasional tree falling across the the road. All trees leaning towards the track from lxyond the right of sray will also be cut down. HUls horo Tudepcndf v L DAXGEKOCS rCRGATlVia. A City raliccmaii'K Tory Peculiar Kxjoriencc.
