San Francisco will in a few months be probably thc best protected city on the whole coast line of the United States. "Within a month or two, two dynam ite guns, recently ordered by the gov ernment, will be on the way" from New York to San Francisco to be placed in a commanding attitude near the city, where they can sweep the entrance to Golden Gate and reach two miles over the ocean. These guns are especially fitted for use from an eminence and their work is almost certainly effective for while the modern ship can stand for hours in the face ot carnage from heavy guns, earning shells or balls, and can live and do eiTectivo work after being literally perforated, the dynamite gun throws a couple of hun dred pounds of dynamite which no ship can withstand. There has been much talk of the opportunity of the Chilian or other vessels lying ontside the Golden Gate and thro wing her shells into the cor ridor of the Palace hotel with im punity, so far as danger from the pres ent defenses is concerned, but the dy namite guus could make it disas trously warm for an enemy, which woidd be forced to vacate its position suddenly and without an immense amount of trouble, which evil prophets always claim a ship would levy. The range of the dynamite gun is sufficient to keep a ship far enough out at sea to prevent her shells reach ing the main portion of the city, so San Francisco can soon breathe freelv.
