The following editorial paragraph recently appeared in this celumn: Liverpool is importing American iron- "Will somefree trader explain this? The facts are directly against Ids assertions. This terse statement of existing facie has implied several of our Dem ocratic brethren in the state to expla nation. The amusing part of the 'ex planations' is that Tun Astokiax had asked for "some free trader" to ex plain. That the Pendleton Eaf.1 Oie gomaiu the Albany Democrat, and the Jacksonville Times, leading Dem ocratic papers, answer the challenge, is, of course, prima Jaeie evidence that these Democratic editors are free trade adherents. Their answers partake of the nature or a "confession and avoidance.' They say, virtually. "Well it's so. but what of it? Simply this: In the presidential campaign of 1SSS Grovor Cleveland declared with all the weight that words -could give, that the duty on iron represented a direct tax and was equivalent to it, and it that duty were taken olT, English iron could be bought in this country at a price as much less as equaled the amount or the present duty. All the Democratic papers stood up on their pastern joints and shouted with one acclaim, "Great is Grovcr, ' when he thus clamors for free trade.' This is history. Now since our Democratic contem poraries avow themselves free traders in i0 as in SS, Tin: Astokiax ;ls an humble seeker after political truth, asks its sapient brethren how they reconcile existing facts and their free trade assumptions?. llcincmber, gentlemen, it is not a theory but a condition that confronts yon. Xkw England is making strong efforts to retain her population. Up ! ...ihisvcnr it cousin hd form for the smaller towns to try and lxom themselves or for the newspapers to praic their sections in the western style. Even sturdy, conservative Ver mon I is advertising herself. An im migration board has been formed, nu merous ljoards of trade have been or ganised, and pamplcts describing the state's resources have been published. The same is true of the other five New England states. So much of theirbesl blood has come west that Ihev are de 4 - -, , . -, ., - , t ,,, , termmed to cheek this loss and the adulteration t.f immigration Troiii Canada and the big cities. This is an I mltmrolrii eturif lint -m nlil-KoHl.! ! country can never keep all its pro gressive inhabitants when a new field field of unmeasured resources is open lKsfore them. IvKFEunxci: was made in Sunday's issue to the "preferred list' of news papers in the United States worth axl Ycrlising in. prepared by Geo. P. Kowcll Sc Co.. the leading advertising agents. Among these "preferred newj IiapcrR." selected by reason of their value, Tin: Astoiuan is given promi nence. It is eculiarly gratifying to note that it is given :is good circula tion figures as some newspapers get that arc published in cities of 1S,000 ( population. That is, The Astokian j ranks as a newspaper published in a city of 1S,000 people. Astoria is not quite so jopulous as that yet, but the ten million of people who see this list of Howell's will judge from the rank and prominence given The Astoklvn that Astoria has 1S,000 inhabitants. There are some whisperings in southern California of a desire to di vide the state. The San Diego Union openly advocates the plan. This is folly. Such a separation would in volve a great increase of taxation, and ! gain nothing. The new state would contain three-rourlhs of the barren land of California, and a small part of its total wealth. The chief cities would be those which experienced collapsed booms and the fanning land would be entirely dependent on irri gation. The vote of the north, includ ing San Francisco, and the San Joa quin valley, which depends on thai city for its market and shipping, could never be obtained for division. The prosperity of the state demands no srach change. Ti.vXiXOT reform must le soon ad opted by Oregon and Washington. The latter state already has a bill be fore the legislature which ought to pass. In ten years there will not be ten states that do not have a law re sembling the Australian system. It is consistent with progress. As this is a characteristic of the northwest, our state should fall into line at the next passion or the legislature. Montana's law may be somewhat defective. That is not the fault of the principle, but of the legislators. The states in tho cast that have tried the change would never repeal their action. There is a grain of comfort io us wlio miss the mails from distant poin t s ia the fact that San Francisco is like wise afflicted. The papers there were al for several days without any tele ffraplnc dispatches outside of Cali fornia. The following from the Chronicle, ot January 30, shows the feeling over the delayednail: "Merchants of this city have nearly given up lwpc of getting" that six days afl which is banked up at Truckee. "Why not establish a dog-sledge service ad bring the letter mail in in Arctic yle? TIkj local pound would nr fek a liberal supply of motive power fer stoh a train." JBoarnoKS in the editorial depart- of the PeJcin Gazette will not be fatly sought, if a. recent state- ment made in its columns, to the ef- Ifcct that of its editors 1,900 Lave been beheaded, is not an exaggeration. If the statement approximates the truth to any degree, it is extremely improb able that the PeJcin Gazette "prints the favorite motto, "The pen is mightier than the sword," at the head of its columns. The morning Columbian appeared last Sunday. It is printed with the material of the defunct Transcript, and resembles that paper a good deal. It says it wants to advance the bast interests of Astoria. Tun Astokian welcomes the newcomer and hopes to find in the Columbian an ally in building tip the city and promoting growth and liar- monv. That Astoria has a bar harbor is used against her growth. It is said that large vessels, ocean steamships will never make this their starling, or final port. To controvert this it is, well to notice that during the recent heavy weather the only boats that went out and in without delay were the largo passenger steamers. The bar had no special terror for them. Tun London Iron ami Htcel Tunics Journal observes that "for the first lime in the history of the American iron trade their markets seem quite independent of ours." ANOTHER JI'IiY LIST. Storm A'dh;; the llivor. The force of the wind was felt up the river even more than afc Astoria. In some places it had the strength of a small cyclone. At Fisherton one corner or the large cannery was blown down and the whole building shaken up. At Oak Point Ihe wind blew so ficrcelj that as the Telephone came by, the passengers could see the trees breaking off. All along down the river the work of the storm was plain. After the roll call and usual formalities, "the chief busi ness considered was that of the amended ordinance for the Cable railroad company. The mayor, as was expected vetoed the ordinance as it blood from the last session, llis communication was as follews: "I hereby return ordinance No., granting a franchise to the PaciGc Cable Construction company passed January 28, 1S90, without my signa ture. It is manifest that due consider ation w;is not given the measure be fore its passage. Too much care and deliberation cannot be exercised in the preparation of ordinances of such grave import. Magxcs C. Crosrv. Mayor of the City of Astoria. The vole was unanimous in sup port or the veto. The ordinance as amended was passed without opposi tion. JThe amendments were pub lished in Sunday's issue. Councilman Welch introduced a resolution to bond the city to the amount of $22,930, which was as fol fel fol eows: Jlesolcal, That the auditor aud po lice judge be and are hereby instruct ed to advertise in Tun Daiia' Morn ing Astorian, Financial Neics and Orcyonian for bids for $22,930 worth of city bonds, running 20 years and drawing interest at -1 per cent., to be paid semi-annually. This was passed unanimously. A resolution was introduced and passed for the city attorney to make an abstract of the title or all that por tion of land lying at the cast end of Concomly street, and on the east side of Main street, known as the exten sion of Concomly street, from Main to Cass street Councilman "Welch introduced an amendment to the ordinance regard ing loaded wagons, etc., to the effect that they could carry only 5,000 pounds instead of 7,000 as before. He said the latter amount was loo heavy for many places in our streets, and that the city wa3 saved from damages m the recent accident by the fact that the load weighed 200 pounds more than the law permits. The resolution was agreed to. Ordinances were passed for issuing warrants to the Pacific Union Packing company for $2,500 for lot 4, block 1, Shivelv's, and to Mrs. Inez Parker for $3,000 for lot 4, block U, McClurc's, for the erection thereon of buildings for the use of the iirc department Bichard McCarron was granted a license for a saloon, subject-to the ap proval of the mayor. A petition was filed by Chas. Eohr and M Meyer, praying that certain costs for advertising for the sale of certain lots on "Washington street as sessments for unpaid sewer bills be refunded. The petition was referred to the committee on streets as it was in connection with the "Washington street sewer, and it was ordered that the chief of police pay all moneys for improvement on this street into the city treasury. J. E. Clinton, agent for the Sunset Telephone Co., petitioned that the provisions in the ordinance on tele graph and like lines be set aside for the streets east of "West Gth street, claiming that the condition of tho streets demands it This petition was Jaid on tho table. In opposing the granting of the petition council man Welch said that it would be fool ish and wrong to do it since so re cently they had passed the ordinance bearing on the matter. The final subject brought up was tho memorializing of congress for the re turn of money spent by the city in improving the land about the post office. Somo action will probably be taken to that end ns it was referred to the proper committee. Adjourned. For a fine article nf Msfpm orAnm cheese try Thompson & Koss'. Time to Buy in and $GO & OTii!
