A Chicago attorney writes to ask the immigration board if he can pur chase 200,000 acres of timber land in Oregon. If he just wants the timber on the land, says the Portland Examiner,t& ho has got to do is to bring a sawmill out here and proceed to cut it down and sell it, "provided ho does- it in a large quantity. If in large quantity and if he is arrested for it, the case will be known in the United States court as ono of "cutting timber on government land," and he will bo made to pay for a few thousand feet and permitted to go on his way. If, however, ho goes to work on a small scale, he is very likely to be criminally prosecuted and sent to the peniten tiary. Two hundred thousand acres, the amount mentioned by the Chicago attorney, will insuro him safely if ha can get away with it, or even the half of it. The "Chicago attorney is evi dently posted and has been reading up. He says "purchaso" in his letter, but ho of course understands that purchase is a technical term, a mere matter of form, and that in Oregon you just grab all the timber you can, arid grabbing where tho government is concerned isn't stealing, provided as above mentioned that yon grab enough.
