of Jackson street in tlie city ot Astoria,
Clatsop county. Oregon, as laid out ami

6,000,000 Feet of Logs Loose.
Eugene, Jan. 29. This morning
about 10 o'clock 6,000,000 feet of logs
broke loose in the Mackenzie and are
going down the river. All attempts to
stop them are f ntile. Several persons "
almost lost their lives in the attempt.
The hard rain that has been falling,
with the aid or tha Chinook winds,
has been melting the snow in the
mountains very fast, anil the river hais ,
risen with a michty rush. Tie start
ing of ihis immense body of logs was
a sight never to be forgotten. A du 1.
heavy, crashing sound was heard, and
thenthe logs started with a mighty
rush. As all attempts to stop them
were without avail, word was tele
graphed ahead so that the lumber
mills could look out for them. Th's
accident will prove a loss of over S30,
000 to the ownera, a blow that some -will
never recover from.
Short in Their Acrounts.
Secretary Noble, through special
agents of the interior department, for
some time past has been investi
gating the accounts of- a largo number
of receivers of public moneys in differ
ent parts of the conutry. The ac
counts of it number were found short,
and in these cases vigorous action will
be taken. Upon recommendation of
tho secretary tho president has made
the following peremptory remevals:

shortage. SS,000; Fred W. Smith,
Tucson, A. T., shortage to tho United
States, S25.0U0, and to private indi
viduals about S23.000 mere: Sterling
S. Smith, at Devil's Lake, N.D., short
age about $1,2S9; Francis L. Ander
son, at Del Norte, Col., shortage about
1,211; Charles Spalding, at Topeka,
Kas., shortage about 3,000. About
ten others who havo been found short
will probably be removed within a few
days.
