BBBBBBWrV afBaSBBBBBSlarkl Farmers, Oh ward. A New Hampshire farmer, whose faith in God and the crops seem to be founded on the granite hills of his native state, gives our tillers of tho soil the following advise about stickto itaveness. A little more nerve and grit wonld be the making of many of our farmers, as other basiness men. "Periods of depression and apparent discouragement como alike to individ uals of all classes, and to tho natioD, out it is not wise, nor jusir iu um selves, our neighbors, or our country men to falter. Let onr watch word be, Onward. To no class of people more than to the farmer is this motto of greater interest. Let us consider a few of the apparent discouragements in cident to a farmer's life. A certain farm buys a shoat for eight cents per pound, and keeps it until ready for market, at which time, after housing and feeding twelve months or such mat ter, pork is only, worth four cents per pound. Naturally the fanner is slightly discouraged, thinking he has poor return for all his labor and feed. Tho next year, perhaps, he gives up the hog business, and has to pay ten or twelve cents a pound for Ms pork, which of necessity he now buys. He has missed again, for he overlooked tho law of reaction. Instances of this kind are constantly occurring in our midst, but it never pays to falter. The beef market of the present time is badly depressed. But if you are beef raising, stick to your banner and await the reaction. Keep onward. History is replete with instances proving tho virtue of this watchword. In peace and in war, the spirit of progress is bound to assert itself and will prevail. It is the spirit of invincible determin ation to advance that moves the in dividual, tho nation and tho world. The battle is not to tho strong alone, bnt to tho vigilant, the active and the brave." Considerable Red Tape. There has been n vast deal of red tape connected with the Teport of the commission to investigate the dalles of tho Columbia, a report that was submitted by the commission long ago. "While it was in the war department tho officers in charge would not allow it to be inspected. "When Secretary Proctor received it he sent it to con gress, and it was referred to the com mittee on rivers ahd harbors and or dered printed. It has been in the government printing office for days. It i3 printed, and now awaits the illus trations and maps which accompany it, but no one has been able to seo it "When it onco gets back to tho house it will be open to inspection, and no doubt will prove a valuable document and aid the committee in making a report of what should be done. The object of keeping it from the public is that the commission was crea'ted by congress, and it would deaden the bright red color of the tape of cour tesy that surrounds a document of this character. The Oregon members have been made acquainted with the general outlines of the report, and the bill introduced by Senator Mitchell for a boat railway has been drafted in accordanco with the recommendations made by the commission.
