Xo preparation for Throat and Lung
Troubles is so prompt in its effects, sc
agreeable to the taste, and so ividelj

"I have suffered for years from a
bronchial troubb that, vvllpnewr I take
cold or am expi'si-d to inclement weath

tickling sensation m the throat ami by
difficulty in breathing. I have tried a
great many remedies, but none does .sc
well as Ayer's Cherry Perioral which
always gives prompt relief in returns oi
my old complaint." Ernest A. Hepler,
Inspector of Public Roads. Parish Ter
re I Sonne, La.
" I rounder Ayer's Cherry Pectoral a
most important remedy
For Home Use.
I have tested it.; curative power. in my
f.tmily, many times during the past
thirty years, and have never known it
Jo fail. It will relieve the most serious
affections of the throat and lungs,
whether in children or adults." Mrs.
E. G. Edgerly, Council Itlufls, Iowa.
"Twenty 3 ears ago I was troubled
with a disea.se of the lungs. Doctors
afforded mo no relief and considered
my case hopeless. I then began to il-o
Ajcr's Cherry Pectoral, and, before I
had finished one bottle, found relief. I
continued to take this medicine until a
cure was effected. I believe that Ayer's
Cherry Pectoral saved my life."
Samuel Griggs, "Waukegan, 111.
"Six years ago I contracted a. severe
cold, which settled on my lungs and
soon developed all the alarming symp
toms of Consumption. I hail a cough,
night sweats, bleeding of the lungs,
pains in chest and sides, and was so
prostrated as to be confined to my
bed most of the time. After trying
various prescriptions, without benefit,
my physician finally determined to give
me Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. I took it.
anil the effect was magical. I seemed.
to rally from the first dose of this
medicine, and, after using only three
bottles, am as well and sound as ever."

San Fkaxcisco, Jan. 20. Superin
tendent Fillmore said this evening:
"Colonel Crocker is side tracked at
Sims, about ten miles south of Duns
muir. There is nearly eight feet of
snow all about his train. A special has
been sent out from Bedding with
about 150 men to clear the way so
that the train may return to Redding.
This will be the third gang of men to
go over the same ground. Heretofore
snow came down as fast as it "was
shoveled off, but the weather may
give us a chance to get ahead this
trip. To add to the difficulties tons
of line rock have come down in ava
lanches on the road. From Sissous
andEdgewood, tho snow for a distance
is Gflcen feet iu depth. In fact, where
there is a cut the snow is just deep
enough to fill it"
"It has been five days," said Super
intendent Palmer of the iostal mailing
division, "since we have handled any
mail from the east No trains havo
arrived by tho overland of Oregon
routes since tho 15th iustant There
are somo 500 sacks of newspapers and
thirty-five lock-ionches of letters
loitering in the snow somewhere, and
wc haven't tho faintest idea when they
will come in here out of tho cold.
Each lock pouch contains about 30,000
missives. If they all arrived now we
would have over a million letters to
distribute. It may be a week before
the blockado is raised and by that
time two or three millions will have
piled up."
SissoKS, Gal., .Tan. 20. Light snow
is falling to-night The snow plow
which was delayed in a canyon near
Itfoit arrived last night and left this
afternoon to ojcn the road to Dnns
muir. The road is blockaded between
Iott and Dunsninir, and Sims and
Redding. Supplies are being brought
to the imprisoned trains at Sims and
Redding. Passengers arc on short
rations. From Sisson north to Edge
wood is still blocked. The track over
the Siskiyou mountains is partly open.
Hell's Population.
In round nnmbcrs the earth has a
population of 1,300,000,000, of whom
300,000,000 are professed Christians,
the other 1,000,000,000 being Moham
medans, Buddhists, Jews, pagans and
heathen. The whole race was con
demned to eternal punishment for the
sin of Adam. This was the fall of
man, for which there was and is no re
demption save through the death of
Christ Biblical chronology gives the
earth a period of about 0,000 years.
From Adam's time to Christ was 4,000
years, during which period no human
souls were saved. The population
may then have averaged 1,000,000,000,
000. Three generations, or 3,000,000,
000 havo passed away in each century.
Fort' centuries, therefore, consigned
120,000,000,000 men to eternal lire,
and, for all we know, they aro there
now.
Iu tho 1900 vears which have elapsed
since the birth of Christ 57,000,000,000
more of human beings have lived and
died. If all the Christians, nomi
nal and real, who have ever lived on
the face of the earth havo been saved
they would have numbered more
than 18,000,000,000.
Now if we deduct this later number
from the grand-total of 177,000,000,000
we find 159,000,000,000 of souls who
are suHenng tho torments ot hell lire,
as against the 18,000,000,000 who have
escaped. But this is not the whole
truth. Nobody believes that more
than 10 per cent of the professed
Christians arc saved. CnlvuiLsts them
selves say that the elect are few. If
this is a fact heaven contains but
1,180,000.000 againt a population in
hell of 175,000,000,000.
atnre In Conrulsion
Is terrific. Volcanic eruptions, cyclones,
earthquakes are awfully and ticinendously
picturesque, but scarcely dcMrabie to emu
late in a-tiou and cllcct hy the administra
tion of remedies which produce convulsion
and aony in the abnormal portion of the
human frame. Such is the eHect of the
old fashioned violent purgatUcs happily
falling more and more into oisusc. and of
which Hostettcr'.s otomach Hitters is ttie
wholesome, pleasant and far more elTcctie
succedaneum. Hi-' weakened the intes
tines the Hitters imlKorates them. They
left the bowels inactive, because incapaci
atcd by ensuing feebleness. The Hitters, on
the contrary, and because it enables, not
forces, them to act -a vast and fortunate
difference perpetuates their acthity and
regularity. The. liver is beneficially stimu
lated, as the kidnejs also are, by this medi
cine, which easily conquers, also, malaria,
