ASTORIA. OREGON:
TCESDAY JAXOAKY 21. 1890
City and County Official Paper.
Coal is brought from Buffalo, New
York, by schooners toDulutli for forty
cents a ton and lumber at $1.50 a
thousand. The prevailing rales now
Irom the Sound ports to San Francis
co are: Coal, $2.75 a ton, lumber $1
;pcr thousand. The distance in both
cases are about the same, being ap
proximately S50 miles.
Tee third bridge at Portland over
the "Willamette has been contracted
rod Trill be completed next June.
It -will consist of six spans of 320 feet
eftch, including approaches it will be
2,270 feet in length. The bridge is a
highway and foot bridge and will al
so be used by the Hawthorn Avenue
& "Woodstock motor line.
Ik consequence of the enormous
production of beet-sugar in Europe
daring the past year, it is stated that
the prices of granulated sugar in this
country will be lower in 1890 than
ever Ixtfore. Cane-sugar until re
cently formed the entire supply of the
world. Now the supply of beet-sugar
is far in excess of that manufactured
from cane.
Peesedext Yak Horn', of the Cana
dian Pacific railroad, thinks that a
journey around the world will bo
made in thirty-eight days within a
few years. This will be when the
great trans-Asiatic railroad across
Russia is completed, with ships cross
ing the Pacific in five days" anil the
journey from the Atlautic to the Pa
cific made in four days, which can be
done to-day. All that will be needed
will be close connections between boat
and rail at every point
Tiie schooner Union, built in 1859
of Douglas fir, by Hall Brothers, of
San Francisco, has been recently
overhauled and the timbers found to
bs as sound as when built Tho El
len Addia, built in 1SG3, after twenty
five years received a thorough examin
ation, showing that every plauk and
timber was as sound as when first put
into position. Ship builders uni
formly recommend this wood for its
strength, elasticity and durability
The Union Iron "Works of San Fran
cisco used this wood for the decks of
the United States warship Charleston
and they express the opinion that it
has no equal for building ships.
A Pcget Souxd paper draws a
pretty picture when it says the time is
not far distant when every hillside in
Washington will be golden and green,
scarlet and purple with fruit, aud the
fruit will bo spoken of in all languages
that have a literature, aud spoken of
only in praise- Every orchard in the
world will bo praised as its
productions approach, or condemned
as they fall below, those of
"Washington's fruit forests. The
same applies with equal force and
beauty to Oregon. Fruit upon our
hills are no longer experimental crops,
and every year the acreage planted in
this profitable, delicious, healthful
crop increases its extent and ratio.
This year the plant is unprecedented.
Yesterday evening the chamber of
commerce formally endorsed the prop
osition to transfer the revenue marine
service ot tho United States to the
naval eslablismeut. In this, the
chamber appears to be acting in uni
son with other commercial bodies
throughout the union. It is claimed
that the transfer embraced in the bill
or senator Chandler now pending, is
in the interests not alone of the offi
cers or that branch of the service, but
in the interests of the country as well?
and the claim docs not appear to ad
mit of successful contradiction. Econ
omy, efficiency aud trade justice are
embraced in the proposition; the
guarding of our coasts and protection
of our commerce arc partially in
volved in the question, and every dic
tate ot national progress in this line
points to the advisability of affirma
tive action upon this bill.
How Barnnm Outwitted the Canadians
"To yon kuow why P. T. Banmni is
unpopular iu Canada askeil a the
atrical agent. "I -will tell yon. There
is a heavy duty on posters iu Canada,
and the showman "who talces a large
quantity ot printed matter into the
dominion is under an enormous ex
pense. Barnnm determined to avoid
the exaction. He planned a Canadian
tour for 1SSG, aud two years be
fore he sent tons of posters to Canada
and neglected to pay the duty. Tho
stuff lay in the custom house without
being called for, and at last the oflicials
decided to advertise it for sale at auc
tion. Barnnm sent an agent to the
ssde to buy up the show bills, and he
did so at a bargain. The secret
leaked out, and that's the reason tho
patriotic citizens of Canada are down
on Barnum."
