An Alabama man died of cigarette smoking the other day and left 10,000 totheY.ALC. A. Exceptixg Illinois, Kansas has now a larger railroad mileage than any state in the union, its main lines cov ering 8,755 miles of road. But four Kansas roads in 1839 have paid any dividend. The death of Walker Blaine, a man of more than ordinary ability, is a savere blow to his father. This is the third death in the Blaine family in a menth: first Airs. Blaine's sister, then Mr. Blaine's brother, and now their eldest son. Thkee members of the Faith Cure society in Brooklyn, who have refused to administer medicines to patients under their charge on the ground that they would be violating God's com mand, have been sentenced to the penitentiary. It is estimated that Philadelphia in fighting the "grip" consumed 2, 000,000 quinine iills weighing about a ton, in ten days. If other cities swallow quinine at the same rate a scarcity of the drug is more imminent than an ice famine. The past year has been an "off" one in fishing followed by the New England, Nova Scotia and Newfound land fleets, and the catch at most of the leading fishing ports, from Prov incetown to St, Johns, shows a falling off of more than one quarter from the average. AEcnmsiior Gitoss of this state has ordered a Triduum throughout his ecclesiastical jurisdiction, in order to ward off the scourge of "la grippe," or influenza. His Grace requests the people to stop cursing, drunkenness and other sins, for by sin hath death entered into this world. Senator Dolte: has introduced into the senate a bill appropriating $500, 000 for the continuance of jetty work at the mouth of the river. A similar bill has, presumably, been iutroducedin the house. The requirements of the situation demand the immediate pas sage of this necessary measure. Stanley sees fine prospects for railway in Africa, According to his estimates S00 miles could be laid down for 817.000,000. This mileage would open to commerce four great river basins, with a total area of 2,-170,000 square miles, and a total population of 80,900,000. Of the resources of the region he speaks in the highest terms. A peeling in favor of a postpone ment of the world's fair until 1895 is growing rapidly, and it is believed that a sufficient number of senators are of that opinion to settle the ques tion, as they have the power to do by delaying proceeding, even if the house should vole for 1892. ATenibers of both parties object to an exposition in 1892, because it is a presidential year. The following from the Benton Leader, narrates one of the most re markable cases in the history of the Willamette valley: "A few days ago we were presented by George Wag goner with a check amounting to sev eral dollars, which was given by the people of Corvallis, who appreciate the interest the home papers are taking in the welfare of our thriving city and Benton county at large." A demoralizing feature of the in fluenza epidemic in Paris is that ladies and gentlemen very partial to alcohol have escaped, while those leading tem perate live3 were the greater sufferers. Physicians, noting this, immediately advised the use of warm alcoholic drinks, with the result that 1,500 per sons were arrested in the streets with in three days for drunkenness. Of this number 1,200 declared that they were simply following the treatment pre scribed for influenza. Speaking of a romantic marriage here is one, romantic or otherwise, according to the point of view. "When the -would-be bridegroom put tho us ual question to papa, that fine soldierly gentleman gazed a few seconds into vacancy, then ho turned his eyes on the expectant lover and spoke as fol fel fol eows: "There's plenty of room in the bouse; come and live "with us for six months; at the expiration of that time, if you "wish to marry my daughter and she wishes to marry you, -we will order the -wedding breakfast" The break fast has been ordered and eaten, but if all engaged couples -were put on that sort of probation there might be fewer marriages, -while very certainly the divorce courts -would lose half their business. Josr after it became known that it -was proposed that the stale should clothe some of the poor children of Qiicago, in order that they might obey the compulsory education law, some socialists suggested that tho state should go a step further and complete the 6chemoby furnishing free food to the children, too. "Your .laws, force the children io go to aofeooy said tho socialists, "and you fmrnkh the teachers free, the build iags free, the text-books free, and owyoa think of furnishing clothes free. Only a little -while ago you put -work-shops in the schools and you are jkw teaching the trades free. Why aot go the -whole -way and pay aMfke expense of bringing up the WULretir This query has caused mm comment, and among people jatenstedin school affairs there is falka.toirbat will become of the Mebory edaoation law ae it stands. A RELIC OF THE WAR. The Carious Confederate Memorial Sup pressed by Uncle Sain. A curious and interesting memento of the civil war is now owned by Mrs. Harriet Hubbard Aver. It is a copy of the colored lithograph known as the Confederate Note Memorial, which was issued by the printing firm of Heatings &Ball, of Columbia, South Carolina, soon after the close of the war. The United States government re fused to let the foreman of the print ing office, who designed tuc memorial, place it on the market, and only a few proofs which had been struck off are now in existence. The main fea true of the picture is the series of Confederate bank notes which are re produced and the memory of which it is designated to perpetuate. The intervening spaces are filled up with stirring battle scenes both on laud and sea. In the center is a design reper senting the fate of the 'Lost Cause." From a slanting flag-staff, which rises out of a lonely little mound by the side of a vast expanse of water, and which is marked by a headstone bear ing the letters "C. S. A.," the colors of the Confederacy droop. In the folds of the flag, which is half furled, is the word "Unknown." In the distant land scape the new moon rises above the milled waters, and the whole scene is one of desolation, touching in its mel ancholy. Beneath the picture is this mournful inscriptien: On Fame's eternal camping ground Their silent tents are spread; "While glory guards with solemn round The bivouac of the dead. At the head of the picture, keystone like, is an exact reproduction of the $10 Confederate bill, and in a group at the bottom are bills of the denom ination of $20, $50 and $500 respec tively. Inscribed about the central design are these lines: Rcpresentiug nothing on God's carih now, And naught in the waters below it, As the nledgo of a nation that passed away, Keep it, dear fnend, and show it. Show it to those who will lend an ear To a tale this triilo will toll Of libertj' born of n patriot's dream. Of a storm-cradled nation that fell. Too poor to possess the precious ores, And too much of a stranger to borrow, Wo issued to-day our promise to pay, And hoped to redeem on the morrow. Tho days rolled on, and weeks became years, Hut our coffers were empty still; Coin was so scarce that tho treasury quaked If a dollar dropped in tho till. Bat the faith that was in us was strong est indeed, Though our poverty well wo discov discev ered: And this little check represents tho pay That our suffering veterans oarned. They knew it had hardly a value in gold, Yet as pold our soldiers received it. It gazed in our C3"cs with n promise to pny, And every true soldier believed it. But our boys thought little of price or pay, Or of bills that wero overdue We knew if it brought our bread to-day 'Twaa the best our poor country could do. Keep it, it tells all our history over, From tho birth of our dream till its last. Modest and born of tho Angel Hope, Like our hope of success, it passed." As the firm of Keatiugs & Paul were the printers of all confederate notes and bonds, it was certainly fit and just that such a memorial should be issued from their office. Yery few southerners, however, have ever seen it, and there are few now who ever laiow of its existence. All the copies found at the lime of its issue were destroyed. The lithograph is 20 by 21 inches, nicely brought out in detail, and against the modest frame of mot tled ash, the effect is impressive. A HE DR. DARRIX'S CURES PERMAN ENT? Joseph 3Ioi)re.
