The spacious lodge room of Beaver

last evening, the occasion being the
public installation of the newly elec
ted officers of Cushing Post No. 14,
G. A. R. and the Ladies Relief Corps.
The impres-ive ritual was fully goue

made, though owing to the unavoid
able detention of several who were ex
pected to be present, the programme
was not carried out in its entirety.
In the house of representatives last
Monday, coutrressmau Hermann intro
duced a bill for the relief of the Or-'
egon Paving and Contract company,
fur cancellation of tho contract to
furnish stone at the mouth of the Co
lumbia river for jetty construction,
and a bill to authorize the Columbia
Bndgo company to construct a bridge
over the Columbia river in Oregon
and Washington from a point near
the crossing of the Columbia slough
road.
The Union Pacific company has won
its suit against tho Northern Pacific
S:nd ng- iu the United States court at
maha, over tho question of passen
gers destined to points on the Sound.
The Northern Pacific refused to ro
ceivo passoagen from the Union
Pacific at Portland, who were going
to points north of that paced on the

brought suit to compel the Northern
Pacific to accept such traffic?, and now
has obtained a decision in its favor.

S. Brice was to-day at noon elected to
the United States senate receiving a
majority of nil the votes in either
branch of the legislature. In the sen
ate Shaw, of Lima district, nominated
Brice. Gaumer, of Zanesville, sec
onded the nomination. Schnider, of
Cincinnati, nominated Murat Hal
stead; Hassle, of Chilicothe, nomi
nated ex-governor Foster.
The vote in the senate was: Hal
stead, 1: Foster, 14; Brice, 19. In the
house a call was demanded to bring
in members. Brown, (Dem.), of Han
cock, who is sick, was carried to the
hall in a chair. The only other Dem
ocrats absent were Troeger, of Holmes,
and Lawler, of Frauklin. who is ilL

sent Hunt, of Sandusky, presented
the name of Calvin S. Brice, and was
seconded by Belleville, ,of Montgomery.

Union Pacific trains did not arrivo to
day. Tho Short Line train should
have reached this city at 7 o'clock
this morning, but will not get iu un
til late to-night. Tho trouble is in
the mountain division between La
Grando and the North Powder river,
where the snow is piled up very deep,
but the steam rotary plows have been
steadily at work, so that it is thought
that trains which left here last night
will get through all right. By the
time they "reach the division, passage
will have been cleared. "Yes," said
superintendent Johnson to The As
TOBiAN reporter this evening, "we
have' got so many snow plows at work
I trust we can keep even with the
snow storms about Pendleton and La

first officer of the steamship Geo. W.
Elder, charged with having brutally
assaulted Peter Norberg, will not be
tried in this district court The ques
tion ot jurisdiction was brought np
again by judge Sabin this morning iu
the United States district court. He
held that the matter belonged to the
United States district court of Alaska,
and must, if tried at all, be tried there.
On motion of tho district attorney the
indictment was dismissed. It is hardly
probablo that Lewis will soon be pros
ecuted as the complainant will not be
likely lo proceed to Alaska with the
matter.
