The deadliest ignis fatuus that ever glittered to beguile and daz tie to betray is agriculture. I speak with feeling on this subject, and I'v been glittered, beguiled and dazzled, and deceived by this same arch de oeiver. She has made me a thousand promises and broken even' one ul tbem. She has promised me early po tatoes and tho rain has destroyej tbem; late potatoes, and the drouth has withered them. She has promi-ed cherries, the curculio has stung them they contain living things uncomely tu the eye and unsavory to the taste She has promised strawberries and the young chickens have devoured them asd the eye cannot see them. No wonder that Cain killed his brother. He was a tiller of the ground. Tnc wonder is he did not lull his father, and then weep because he had not v grandfather to kill. No doubt hi: Early Kose potatoi-s, for which he pain Adam $7 a barrel, had been cut dowi, by bugs from the head walero of tht Euphrates; his Pennsylvania wheat had been winter killed and was no worth cutting; his Norway oats haa f-one w straw and would not yiel I fivi pacts per acre, and his J31ack Spanish watermelons had been stolen by boy who Lad pulled up the vines, broken down bin patent picket fence, ;mj wiinen scurrilous doggerel all ovci .his bask gate. To tie Sfllsiay Contractors on Tie Astoria Street Car Extension. CIV EX A. CHOICE IXTUEXJLTTEIt. Gentlemen: Iu November lastve rere instructed to proceed to obtain subsidies and right of way for the above. lost res idents on the proposed route came out willingly to join in the enterprise and gave liberally towards the project on the distinct understanding that the road should be extended and energet ically operated for their benefit and the benefit of the public generally with some propelling power more suit able to this growing city than animals. The subsidies were all contracted for on this distinct understanding with us acting in the above capacity. The Astoria Street Car company have received our report since Jan'y 1st instant, and have now declined to act upon it, but have instead decided to extend the present system as far east as Alderbrook only; with which decision we cannot of course complain neither have we any right or inclina tion to dictate any other course or sur mise what events caused tbem to ar rive thereat But this will not we feel sure satisfy those who contracted to give subsidies for the complete sys cem as was originally contemplated, viz: to give a rapid and complete sys tem of transportation to the city. We therefore at the request of several of the contributors make this statement viz: that wo will return the contracts to all who desire to have them or we will accept an assignment of them for use at the eailiest possible moment, either with the Astoria Street Car company should thy later ou elect to proceed or with a new company should one be formed as is at present contem plated; for we are sure you do not wish the efforts which have been made by you and ourselves to be purely abortive. Wo shall therefore be pleased to receive any indication of your wishes or suggestions tbat may aid a new corporation formed either by yourselves or others who may desire to keep pace with the demands and exigen cies of the city so as to show the out ido world that wo can and will at least help ourselves, our visitors, our wives and our families to obtain all Jio advantages offered by modern science, and appliances for rapid transportation over and around the city. Wo now leave the matter in your har.ds and arc Buro the results will bo mutually satisfactory, H. Jackson & Co., Civil Engineors. The Oregon Land Go. J. Lm O HAS AN ASTORTA OFFICE $. W. COR. Editor Asteria: Senate bill No. 41 introduced by senator Seaborg of Pacific county, Washington, at Olympia is only a copy of the old bill, modified so that the new features arc solely in the favor of the trap men, and in tho whole bill there is nothing that favors protection to young salmon. In the old bill, where it says that no weir, trap, stake, net shall extend more than one-third of the stream wherein it is placed; it now reads in section 14 of the new bill one-half, that is to say if the owner of one bank of a river, stream or slough should choose to erect a trap or any other fixed appliance for catching fish, then the owner of the bank directly oppo site, can do likewise and thus com pletely block it up. There are many small streams in Washington that are now uavigable where salmou ascend, that would be rendered useless if this bill becomes a law. For instance the Chehalis, on which is situated the booming and ! flourishing city of Aberdeen, and at the head of navigation is the city of Montesano. I know from experience tbat they wnnt all the water room they cau get, with nothing to spare either in breadth or depth. This bill is a menaco to shipping, loggers, fishermen and all parties who navigate the waters of small rivers and streams, and it appears to me that tbe trap men, not content with the privi leges they have already usurped, are now endeavoring to own the whole water. The attention of the legislature of Washington is respectfully directed to this bill, as it is altogether one sided. Very respectfully, Tzak Walton. Notice.
