James Buck Dairs, a cotton planter
and horse trader, has been arrested at
San Antonio, Texas, for the murder
of a man named Jsd wards, m Utmhage,
Miss., seven years ago. Detectives
claim that he is one of the perpetra
tors of the Buck Hill train robbery
years ago.
The International Maritime exhi
bition, which opened in Boston the
first week in November, will close
to-day in gloom, especially for the man
ager and all who are financially in
terested iu it. The public did not ap

A Michigan supreme court decision
renders invalid the law under whicli
corporations have oeen organized in
that state for five years. This renders
all the members of corporations organ
ized in the past five years liable as
partners, and creates consternation
among the corporations involved.
Arkansas state is undergoing a re
markable rainfall, the storm having
been raging for three days. Travel
on railroads is virtually suspended.
The Iron Mountain road, from St.
Louis north to Little Bock, is under
water for miles, and no trains have
reached that city for forty-eight hours.
The exodus of negroes from North
and South Carolina is reported to
have begun in earnest. Over 2,000
passed through Greenville, S. C, to
the southwest They came from North
Carolina. The last week 4,000 negroes
passed through Charleston on their
way to Florida, Alabama and Georgia.
Major Burke, the defaulting ex
state treasurer of Louisiana, in an in
terview in Honduras said he would
probably not bo able to leavo his Hon
duras interests until the beginning of
next March. It was a painful situa
tion for him to be in, but he would
have to endure it for some months to
come.
From letters and documents found
concealed in the clothing of Piorra,
the .Nihilist leader, the most damag
ing evidence is obtained against many
persons high in imperial favor and
authority in Eussia, contemplating
not the assassination of the czar alone,
bntjthe murder of tlie entire reigning
family as well.

men reported sick is 36.1, showing a
steady increase.
The total number of deaths result
ing from the Tilden school fire at
Detroit has reached eight, It will be
remembered that while rehearsing for
a Christmas cantata, the clothes of
one of the children of a class of fifteen
caught fire, and her companions gath
ered around her to extingiush the
flames, when nearly all were seriously
burned. Bessie Bauford and Lucy
Bedshaw died last Tuesday.
