Found a Hole fr IKm.
A Washington man has recently re
turned from an extensive tour of Eu-j
rope, says the Washington Post.
During his absence he wandered from ,
the beaten path of travel and explored J
new ana undiscivereJ. land?, in one
of these side excursions he landed in
an obscure German town, and to his
surprise met an old friend of whom ho
had lost track of these eight jears.
After exchanging greetings and taking
in the melancholy and dejected air of
the exiled one, the traveler asked:
"What are you doing here?"
I am the American consul at this
confounded place, and have been for
the last eight vears."
"How is that? Didn't the Demo
crats fire you out?"
"They would hardly do that." said
the consul with a sickly smile. The
pay is S120 a year. Beer and rye bread
are cheap, however, and I can" live on
about that figure."
"But tell me howou came to get
here."
"It "was this way. I had a friend
who had an influential friend who
knew secretary Blaina intimately.
Through this channel I made appli
cation for a place and was brought in
contact with the secretary. This was
in the early days of the Garfield ad
ministration. Mr. Blaine gave me a
cordial grasp of the hand and beamed
one of those warm, magnetic smiles
on me.
" 'Ah yes, tf r. L . You are one
of the Ii 's of Ohio, are you not?
Yes, I knew your father very well, sir,
in my younger days. You would like
a consulship, perhaps?"
"Visions oi gold lace and diplomatic
receptions appeared before my eyes.
I managed to say that was in the line
of my ambitions. Then Mr. Blaine
smiled again.
" 'Well Mr. L , there are plenty of
pegs and not many holes, but I think
we will have to find a hole for ou.'
"He found a hole and put me in it,
signed the commission, audi have
been in a hole ever since."

Michigan fanners are mortgaged
for 19 per cent of their assessed value.
The value of the farm products is
8100,000,000. Nineteen per cent of
this, $19,000,000, must be credited to
mortgages. The interest paid is $ir
636,265. Deducting this from $19,

Branding the Oysters.
The members of the Wash, legisla
ture, from the bunch grass country
are trying to evolve a proper bill to
promote the oyster industry on the
Sound. One member who is some
what familiar with long-horned steers
and annual roundup suggested that
each owner of a band of oysters should
adopt a brand and be required to
file a copy with the count auditor,
and publish it in a newspaper Ho
thought that tbo slitting of ears or then
low-or upper cuts, or shoulder or hip
brands on oysters, would solve the
whole difficulty.
