"My wife had a distressing couch,
with pains in the side and breast, we
tried various medicines, "but none did
her any good until I got a bottle of
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, which has cured
her. A neighbor, Mrs. Glenn, had the

the use of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. I
have no hesitation in recommending this

AN EXOCH ARDEN.
Result of a Two-Year' Play In Alaska.
Caplain Peter Bayne, who was ship
wrecked on the schooner Ino of San
Francisco near Point Barrow, Aictic
ocean, in 1887, where he remained two
years before lie was relieved, has re
turned to Port Townsend and found
his wife married to William J. Forbes,
Forbe3 was employed by Bayne to at
tend the ranch near "Whatcom. He
finally induced Mrs. Bayne to secure
a divorce on the grounds of 'willful
desertion and failure to provide, not
withstanding the fact that she Lad re
ceived provisions constantly from
Bajne's employers, S. BT. Frank & Co.,
on Battery street, San Francisco.
Forbes corroborated her statements
and the divorce was granted. They
were married in Dungeness, "Wash.,
last October. Tho woman had two
children by Bayne, a girl and a boy,
aged 9 and 7 years.
Mrs. Bayne is a daughter of Eev. B.
F. Yandeventer, formerly of Tulare,
CaL, later a Methodist minister of
Seattle and now of Winnemucca, Nov.
During the time Bayne was near Point
Barrow ho whaled from shore and
captured twelve whales, a large num
ber of walrus and seals and plenty of
ivory, aggregating a value of 60,000,
and therefore returned there compara
tively wealthy. He sued out a war
rant charging JForbes with adultery
and conspiracy. Forbes escaped.
The woman endeavored to shield
Forbes by threatening to swear
her second husband clear of
any charges preferred by the first.
Bayne found his wife secreted there
and persuaded her to surrender the
children. She has been married six
weeks.
Bayne and his wife were highly re
spected in "Whatcom, where they had
a comfortable home, and tho Yande
venter family are well known all over
tho coast The prominence of the
parlies creates a sensation on the
Sound. Mrs. Forbes (Mrs. Bajne)
said she was led by Forbes to believe
that Bayne had deserted her or else
she would have written to him. She
is a beautiful woman, intelligent, and
until her husband's departure was re
ligiously devoted to him. Bayne will
take the children to Nevada and sup
port his former wife the remainder of
her life. Forbes had induced tho
woman to prove up on Bajne's prop
erty as an abandoned wife, and had
nearly secured the title to the property
when Bayne unexpectedly returned.
The property is now valued at $10,000

twenty years and have never been able to
put up a egetablc compound that would,
like Simmons Liver Regulator, promptly

and at the same time aid (instead of weak

The First of The Season.
A beautiful Chinook salmon, the
first of tho season, was exhibited at F.
C. Barnes's market yesterday. It
weighed thirty pounds and was in
splendid condition. It was brought
in by the fisherman who caught it,
who handled it as carefully as if it
had been a baby, and who went off
smiling when he received six big Am
erican dollars for it It did not last
long, for half of it w;is taken for the
Arlington club at once. This winter,
seems bound to beat the record
of last winter, Avhen the first
Chinook salmon was received heie
a little after New Year's. The advent
of the Chinook, following that of the
smelt, strengthens the belief of weather
sharps-in the idea that winter is over.

Tl:e ?p'kaio Falls and Northern.
The story of the Spokane Falls and
Northern reads. like magic. About
eleven months ago D. C. Corbin,
brother of Austin Corbin, the New
York financier, sold out to the North
ern Pacific his branch road and line of
boats by which the Ccour d'Alene
miues are reached. With the com
fortable feeling of a man about to
take a good rest, ho started for the
east, but stopped, over a day or two in
Spokane Falls. Some of the business
men of the city talked with him about
the feasibility of a railroad north to
Colville. The conversation was gene
ral. No propositions were made on
either side. Mr. Corbin went east
and had his rest About the middle
of February he returned to Spokane,
took a carnago and drove northwaid.
Tho country, even in midwinter,
pleased him. "When he got in from
his tour lie made a proposition to tho
Spokane busiuess men.
"I told them," said Mr Corbin, in nar
rating the story, uthat if they would
subscribe 100,000, I'd undertake
to build a load to Colville. -They got
out, and by thunder, in four da s they
had raised tho money. I immediately
telegraphed some 'friends in New
York I knew I could rely on. They
said all right and I went ahead. Be
fore I left here in March to go east, I
had organized a company, put -engineering
parties in the field, and had
let some contracts. The snow was
still on the ground. I went east.
made the financial arrangements and
came back. The road is finished to
Colville, 88 miles. It is finished in the
most substantial manner, with a max
imum grade of only one per cent near
ly the entire distance. The equip
ment is complete, and of the very best
quality throughout. How was it
done? I said to myself: 'This road
has got to be built and mnning to
Colville by the 10th of October'. I
believe in pushing an enterprise of
this kind. It works things up to a
high pressure, and is, in the end, the
cheapest. Within eight months from
the inception of the scheme trains
are running- on regular schedule.
