New Orleans, Dec. 7. -The remains
of Jefferson DavLs are lying in state
in the council chamber of the city
hall. The coffin rests upon a cata
falque devoid of much ornamentation.
The casket has a silver plate upon
which is the simple inscription : " Tef
ierson Davis at rest," with the date of
his death. 13adges of confederate as
sociations, Hags of "Washington artil
lery, which were carried through the
war, and a bunch of wheat and a pair
of crossed Spanish daggers fastened
togother with purple ribbon, arc the
only other ornaments. The darkened
room is partially lit up by clusters
of electric lights, their brilliancy
dimmed by the sable drapery. Sol
diers in uniform stand guard; stacks
of arms and cannons fill the corners
of the chamber, and all around the
walls are rows of plants and shrub
bery. Since early this morning peo
ple have been pouring in to obtain
a last look at the dead. All classes
are represented in the procession by
the bier. A number of colored peo
pie were noticed in the crowd.
Marked mourning is general and ev
ery place of prominence in the city
put on black. A noteworthy event
tliis morning was a telegram sent by
mayor Shakespear to secretary of war
Proctor, officially notifying him of the
death of ex-secretary Davis, and the
dale of the funeral.

Lisbon, Dec. 7. The steamer Ala
gias with ex-emperor Dom Pedro, of
Brazil, and party on board, and Hy
ing the old Brazilian nag, arrived in
the Tagus this morning. She an
chored off Belem. a suburb of Lisbon
opposite the Lazaratto, but was not
to undergo quarantine, The party
came ashore immediately, and landed
at the naval arsenal. Before they
left the steamer sho was boarded bv
king Carlos, who extended a warm
welconi to the ex-emperor. Dom
Pedro is in excellent spirits and ap
peares not to have suffered by the
recent events in Brazil.
It is said he intends to issue a man
ifesto to the Brazilian people. Dom
Pedro declines to discuss tho recent
events in Brazil. Count Deu intends
to go to Spain on a visit to duke De
Montepenze. Don Pedro will prob
ably remain in Lisbon a few days and
then proceed to Paris.
AGAINST CHINESE IMMIGRATION.
Ottawa, Ont., Dec. 7. The follow
ing telegram has been received by
premier McDonald in behalf of tho
bread winners and electors of this
city. "I earnestly protest against any
modification of Chinese restriction
act; the measure is a necessary protec
against the dangerous invasion of the
worst form of debased Mongolian
heathism which tends only to degrade
labor and impoverish the country.

of the mill is mi edger saw, part of it
above, and the greater part of it below
the sut face of a table in which the saw
work?. The boy had gone under tliis
table in his quest for sawdust and it
i-, supposed not remembering anything
of the swiftly revolving faw over
his lscad. raised up quickly.
James McComber, who was
working in another part of the room
heard a smothered cry and a peculiar
grating noise and rushing to the spot,
found the prostrate form of the un
fortunate lad, spattered with blood
from a hideous laceration of his head,
the upper half of tho poor little fel
low's head having been sawed off.
The inanimate form of the child
was removed to coroner Surprenant's
undertaking rooms and thence to the
house of tho heart broken mother,
who has the sj mpatlr. of the commu
nity in her terrible bereavement.
