Defended His Father.
There was a most touching scene
in an Arizona court room a few deys
ago that of a son, a lawyer, defend
ing his father, who was charged with
the crime of murder.
The father of assistant city attor
ney Callen, of San Diego, Cal., re
cently shot and killed a man, as he
claimed, in self defense. The son
took charge of his father's case and
went into Arizona to defend him.
He is known as one of the most elo
quent lawyers in Southern Califor
nia, and that in the defense of his
father his eloquence did not forsake
him, is well ffhown by this little ex
tract from his plea before the jury:
"If every monntain side from where
yonder Boaffold in the courthouse
stands, to the relator's home'in Kan
sas, far away where his wife and
children await our Christmas comiDg,
unconscious that this hearing is go
ing on, were covered with scaffolds,
and hungering for his body, and if
every valley in between were yearn
ing to give it n burial place, I still
should say that he would have been a
coward and unworthy of the love I
bear him were lit1 to hnvi left me
fatherless by rtoioi; less thuu what
he was so unfortunately compelled
to do.''
It is not given to many young men
to defend a father in a court of jus
tice, but in this case Mr. Cnllen wsis
most successful, aud his father was
discharged.

The nervous system, often suffers a dimin
