All Men Tree And Equal.
There was a large-girthed man in a
car on the elevated road as I rode
down town the other morninp, who
got tip and gave his seat to a homely
faced working girl, and then stood
hanging on to a strap all the way
down to Cortlandt street. No one
spoke to him, except a fussy little
gentleman with presumptuous man
ners, who made suoh aa effort to en
gage the gentleman in conversation
that everybody around smiled, the
object of the conversational included.
The big man said nothing whatever,
but merely bowed his head occasion
ally in dignified recognition of what
his tormentor was saying. It was
Grover Cleveland, ex-president of the
United States, a practicing lawyer of
the city of New York and a freehold
er. There were two things worth taE
ng note of in that episode. The gal
antry with which he tendered his
seat "to the plain-faced girl was a
tribute to womanhood. "When Grover
Cleveland became president he didn't
have the reputation of being overly
gallant. His sweet wife haa possibly
tempered his chnracior. ' t all
events his action was an example and
a lesson. The other point is the per
fection of American institutions. Yes
terday this man was the ruler of
sixty millions of people. To-day he
pays a nickel for a ride alongside la
borers, washerwomen, business men
and others, who use the elevated road
system, and hangs on by the strap
like any of the rest of us. He is one
of the people to-day, where yesterday
he was one of the mighty rulers of
earth. The pinched-faced newsboy
who sold him a paper as he left the
train mny be one of his successors in
the "White House. The man who at
present occupies it will in a single
day come to the plane on which
Grover Cleveland now walks. It 13

Tor; Letter.
A Close Observer-
'Tfs no wonder that robbers go out
to rob,'' observed a tramp the other
day na he sat ou a salt barrel in front
of a grocery on West street. "Any
man with an ounce of brains can make
a sure thing of it."
"Please explain."
"Why, it's this way. While I never
stole a cent's worth in all my life, I've
been tempted a thousand times. Let
me give you tho lay of the nverage
farm house. There is niwnys 50
cents on the kitchen cloek shelf to
buy notions of tho peddler. If the
farmer 13 working, his silver watoh
hangs on a nail just to the right of
the shelf. In the bedroom off the sit
tingroom you'll find all tho jewelry.
It's always kept in the left-hand cor
ner of the bottom bureau drawer."'
"How do you know?"
"You never mind. The deeds and
other papers are in n tin box under
the bed. If there's any sum of money
above S10 in the honse it's in a baking-powder
can on tho top shelf of
the pantry. No farmer goes to bed
with over SI or $2 in his pocket. He
lays his pants ou a chair at the foot
of the bpd mid they can always be
reached from the window. The key
to tho barn hangs on a nail over the
kitchen sink, and the lantern always
hangs in the cellar-way."
"You are a close observer, my
friend."
"Well, perhaps, bn no more than
the rest of the boys. I can go
through tho average farmhouse at
midnight and never touch a chair nor
squeak a door, and I'll find things
just whore T have told vou they were
kept."
