Monkey Miners.
Captain E. Metz tells a story of
the queer little animals who
work for him in the mines. He is
from Vermont, -and fought in the
Union army daring the rebellion and
settled in tho south after the war.
His mines are situated near Chester
field, in South Carolina, about twen
ty miles off the railroad.
"I have twenty-four monkeys,"
said he, '"'employed about my mines.
They do the work well oi seven able
bodied men, and it is no" reflection up
on the human laborers to say they
do a class of work a mau cannot do
as. well. In many instances they
lend valuable aid where a man would
be useless. They gather up small
pieces of quarts that would pass un
noticed by the workman and pile
them up in little heaps that can
be easily gathered up in a shovel and
thrown into the mill. They are ex
ceedingly adept at catching the little
particles. Their sharp eyes never es
cape the very things that the human
eyes would pass over."
"How did you first come to employ
them?"
"When I went to digging gold I had
two monkeys that were exceedingly
interesting nets. They were con
stantly following me about the
mines', and one day I noticed they
were busily engaged in gathering up
little bits of quartz and arranging
them m piles. They seemed to enjoy
the labor very much and would go to
tho mines every morning and work
there during the day. It did not
take me long to catch on to their value
aslaborers, for at that time our work
ingmeu, who are mostly colored men,
were unskilled and oftentimes useless.
My two pets had not worked long be
fore I decided to procure more. So I
immediately imported a number, and
now have two dozen working daily in
and about my mines. It is exceed
ingly interesting to watch my two
pet monkeys teach the new ones how
to work, and strange to see how the
new-comers take to it."
"Strange to say they control them
selves. They work as thev please,
sometimes going down into the mines
when they have cleaned up all the
debris on the outside. They live and
work together without quarreling
ny more than men do. They are
quite methodical in their habits and
go to work aud quit like true work
ingmen." LOOK OUIFOR FIRE.
To Theater Owncre. Managers and Whom it
May Concern :
This is to certify that 1 have oauipped the
Windsor theater in this city witn the Lind
gren stationary chemical firo engines. After
examining all other systoms of firo protection,
and after repeated tests of th Lindgron sta
tionary chemical Gro engino, and upon tho re
commendation of tho insurance undar-writ-ors,
I havo no hesitation in pronouncing it
tho cheapest and most powerful, as well as
perfect, tiro protection for theaters over in
vented. In my opinion every theater ard
opera house in tho United States, as well as
Europe, should bo equipped with these chem
ical fire engines, and thus savo tho loss of lifo
and thousands ot dollars in property.

Tacomn. Wash.. Sopt. 1!. 18S9,
To Whom it May Concern ;
This is to certify that I. Ooorgo A.liurbank,
witnessed tho exhibition of the Lindgron
chemical engino tost to-day. and as I have
witnessed a great many such chemical te3ts
in Now York City, lloston. Mas3., and other
largo citios in tho East, t hereby Stato that it
was tho quickest and most satisfactory test,
and was also pronounced so by two of our
councilmon and all tho citizens presont, and I
will also state that tho timo of applying the
chemical was left entirely to mo and I did not
givo tho word until tho firo was well startod,
for in other tests I havo witnessed thoy have
always put tho chemical on tho minutothe
firo was started and wator would answer just
as well, as there was nothing but the flame
started and tho wood not charred, and I take
great ploasuro in recommending the'VLind
gron" as far superior to any other '"Chemical"
engine on tho market.
