-V m Wlt ga gwfoti. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY.. ....SEPTEMBER 24. TWIN CITIES. The growth of Minneapolis and St. Paul, so near and yet neither of them antagonized by tho other but rather helped by its neighbor's presence, has been one of the most interesting fea tures of the development of the won derful growth in the United States. There are indications that another instance of twin cities may occur, in the future growth of Astoria. Two centers of activity seem likely to de velop, separated less widely than St. Paul and Minneapolis, and likely to grow into one-city in less time, but still for some years showing the double growth, each assisting the other until they combine in one. Taylor's Point is developing from the presence of the Astoria and South Coast railway (practically, by the laws of trade and traffic, the Southern Pacific and Oregon Pacific terminals, wheth er so considered or not). These two transcontinental roads must rapidly absorb the shipping facilities from a point opposite the site of the Astoria and South Coast depot west ward along the Columbia to the point and thence up Young's bay including the deep water frontage of Williamsport. The high ground ad joining this frontage will necessarily cause a quicker extension along the water front (just as has taken place in Astoria extended eastward to Al derbrook) than would be the case if a larger area of low ground lay behind the water frontage. On the other hand the Northern Pacific, the O. R & N. Co., the Union, Pacific and the Sound roads are likely to be tied up to the John Day portionpf Astoria by the same high ground, and forced to make their terminal east of Tongue Point, along the deep water of the Prairie channel; getting in this loca tion the benefits both of the Astoria channel of the Columbia and at the middle channel; and thus being inde pendent of the evil results of channel alterations caused by fish traps, (as lately referred to by the U. S. en gineers) and by accidental obstruc tions. There will be the wharfage and distributing inlet, such as most of our cities, Chicago, Cleveland, etc., rely on so much to bring commerce well within the city limits. Before many years the banks of that stream will be lined with wharves accommodating tho re ception of the goods and materials coming to Astoria from land and sea. Whether the Northern Pacific or the Union Pacific (through the O. R. & N. company,) will get the first and larg est foothold on this eastern end of Astoria remains to be seen. When these four great transcontinental roads center in Astoria, and the local roads crowd in from the north beach, from the country north of the Colum bia, from the upper Young's river country, and from below TiUamook, the doubters and disbelievers who. have scoffed at Astoria's future will witness the most interesting scramble for territory that the Pacific coast has yet seen. Debility "For four years my wife suffered with J large tumor bunches on the glands under the arms, and general debility of the whole system. She became so poor in health that we were on the verge of despair regarding her recovery. Physicians did not seem to understand her case; at all events she never derived any benefit from their treatment. She finally concluded to try Hood's Sarsaparilla. The Immediate effect was so marked and satisfactory that she continued to take it, and this is the result: She has gained in weight From 84 to III bounds and is stronger and in better health than she has been for years. The bunches under her arms have diminished, and we believe Hood's Sarsaparilla will be too liiuch for them in time." J. J. Nokcross, 220 Com mercial Street, Boston, Mass.
