The champion ''beat" of the west,
That the boys thejr were stickers, and
thoroughbred kickers,
If once they were put to the test
They Bhut up the great J. D. Bainey,
And forced faim to take a baok seat.
He looked kind of puzzled, to find him
self muzzled;
And see his pet schemes getting beat.
Again let us cheer for the "Kescues"'
Astoria's pride and boast. ' ,
They showed they were plucky, and "hap
py go lucky,"
The pride of the northwest coast.
Another three cheers for the trainer
That coached them to win the feat.
The fact they've unfurled to the whole
of the world
That Astorians cannot be beat.
And again wo must cheer for the ladies,
"Who aoted loval and true.
"With the bravest of hearts, they well
done their parts
And stuck to the bovs in bine.
They cheered our heroes in action
"While the boys were winning renown.

Among the patrons of a certain
American university is a Mr. M ,
who, beside being a geuerous broad
minded, although very illiterate
merchant, is in high esteem in that
seat of learning on account of the
considerable financial aid he has from
time to time furnished. At the Al
umni dinner once, he was called upon
for n speech, but declined. The
guests would not be put off in that
summary manner, and applauded un
til Mr. M was forced to get on
his feet. With muoh confusion the
orator began by Baying: "My friends,
you know I wa3 not a college man.
Even now I don't know whether the
refreshment class comes previously
before the sycamore cla3s or previ
ously after, but-; " The noise of
mingled laughter and applause which
followed drowned the conclusion of
the sentence, and Mr. M sat
down, looking confused, but smiling,
with the vague consciousness that he
had made a "hit," although he was
not exactly aware of its precise na
