ASTOKIA. OREGON:
WEDNESDAY-
..SEPTEMBER 18. 1889.
Petroleum "vas discovered thirty,
years ago. The Standard Oil com
pany recently celebrated the event by
holding a state Democratic convention
in Ohio.
Montana's new constitution, it is
said, prohibits logrolling in her legis
lature. Any member -who promises
his vote for a measure in considera
tion of another's vote on another
measure is deemed guilty of solicita
tion of bribery.
Justice Miller, of Iowa and Jus
tice Field, of California are the two
men now on the supreme bench, who
owe their places to President Lincoln.
The other two whom he appointed,
David Davis and Noah H. Swayne,
are dead. Justice Miller is nearly 75
vears old.
The "cold fresh air cure' is a new
cure for consumption. Slowly being
accustomed to the action of air, the
patient is moved a little nearer each
day toward an open window. The
last stage of the cure consists in
sleeping in the open air, regardless of
wind, rain or snow.
Dr. Greek, of the "Western Union,
is very much inclined to doubt the
financial success of extending the tel
egraph lines to 40,000 little postoffices
in order to make the blessings of the
telegraph service well nigh universal
for the people. Mr. AVanamaker lias
set his heart upon the scheme.
Edison is reported, in a conversa
tion with au interviewer who solicited
his ideas on the subject of the pro
jected world's fair in New. York, as
saying that he would take an acre of
space in such a fair and completely
cover it with his inventions, of which
he has no less than seventy now un
der way. "One of the most peculiar,
and now promising good results,"
said Edison, "is what 1 may
call a far sight machine." By
means of this extraordinary invention
he hopes to be able to increase the
range of vision by hundreds of miles,
so that, for instance, "a man in New
York could see the features of his
friend in Boston with as much ease
as he could see a performance on the
stage. That," he added, "would be
an invention worthy a prominent place
in the world's fair, and I hope to have
it perfected long before 1892."
No merchant needs to be told that
discounts mean wealth. In fact, no
retailer can afford to lose them. No
tice a few figures: Suppose you have
820,000 at G per cent, invest 81,000 of
it in fitting up a store and the other
819,000 in merchandise, which is
turned over three times a year. Fig
ure your prices so they shall cover
cost of goods and expenses, not includ
ing interest on capital. By paying
ten days cash for your goods 819,000
three times your discounts will
amount to 83,420, which, less 81,200
interest on capital, leaves you a net
gain of 82,220. Thus a business of
only'about 860,000, with goods sold at
cost, yields over 3 per cent., constitut
ing a fair income, after paying G per
cent on the capital invested. Is it,
then, any wonder that the gigantic
concerns with sales among the millions
can sell goods at close figures and still
rejoice in princely incomes? There
are thoughts in these fignres which
all business men will do well to pon
der.

SLOGGED TO DEATH.
St. Louis, Mo.. Sent. 17. A brutal
prize fight occurred here last night
which resulted in the "death of one of
the participants. Thos. E. Jackson,
lo years old, is the victim. He fought
Ed. A. Hearn, a local light weight
champion, eleven bloody rounds,
and at the opening of the twelfth
fell fainting in his second's arms.
The fight throughout was the most
desperate ever witnessed in the ring,
science beiug lost sight of and slog
ging marking the fight throughout.
By the time half a dozen rounds had
been fought the men and their sec
onds were covered with blood as also
was the sawdust on the floor, while
the water with which the fighters
were sponged was as red as blood it
self. When Jackson was unconscious
he was carried to a room above the
saloon where three physicians worked
vigorously to restore him but without
avail and at 11 o'clock this moruiug
Jackson died. He is a son of George
M. Jackson, a well known local green
backer. The affair has created in
tense excitement as a number of prom
inent people are likely to become in
evolvd. The spectators principally
were pool alley sports who made up
a purse of 830 for which the boys con
tested with two ounce hard gloves.
Chief of police Heubler has-ordered
the arrest of all the parties concerned
in the affair.
