LZ) t Sails gotfiw. ASTOBIA. OREGON: SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 1889. The manager of the FraserJriver. hatchery is ready to plant 10,000,000 salmon eggs as soon as troughs can be made for them. One of the southern humorists and philosophers, 'Bill Arp," lays it down as a fixed principle that "the negro was given a bach seat by the God who made him, and he will keep it." Iowa people ought to be reason ably happy this year. It ha3 a big Eepublicau majority, is out of debt, its jails are nearly empty, and it has a great crop of nearly everything that grows. The Houston, Texas, Tribune thinks that "it will not be many years and the South, that is gradually but steadily developing its vast resources, will be more intensely protectionist than is Pennsylvania. A movement is on f oot at Chicago to erect a million-dollar monument to general Grant and have his re mains brought to that city, the monu ment to be unveiled at the opening of the world's fair. The proposition meets with general and enthusiastic approval. Negotiations are in progress at Minneapolis for the sale of the Pitts burg and "Washburne mills, the West side water-power and the Minneapolis and Northern Line elevators to an English syndicate. The only unset tled point is the value of the Wash burne estate's interest. The sealing owners at Victoria de nounce the story telegraphed to a San Francisco sensational journal that an organized raid was contem plated by them upon the seal islands in Behring sea. The piratical charac ter of the undertaking stamped the story with falsehood, and it was not credited in this country. Theke are in the East End of Lon don nearly one million people, 10 per cent, of whom never know what it is to have enough to eat or have a regu lar home to live in. There are over two hundred thousand people in fam ilies of which the head never earns more than $5 a Aveek. When the rent is deducted from the earnings there is not enough left to buy any but the most wretched food, such as would cause indignation if it were offered to convicts here. John I. BiiAui, the New Jersey rail road king, who recently testified in a legal proceeding that he was worth from $40,000,000 to 00,000,000, says that he laid the foundation of his for tune by trapping when a boy. It was in 1809, while living on the homestead farm near Blairstown, that the spirit of money-getting took possession of him, audjlie began trapping for rabbits. He caught them by the dozen. The local market being dull, he walked to Easton, Penu., twenty miles away, and after dickering with the various merchants, sold a lot of skins for 1. This was the first money he ever owned, and Mr. Blair declares that he then felt richer than he ever has since, dospite his wealth. A CALIFORNIA. SENSATION. JPetaluma Courier. Itls reported thatthosalesoftho"CalifornIa Remedy," Joy's "Vegetablo Sarsaparilla, have grown within a few months till they are now Teally sensational. Tho way tho fame of this production .has spread is simply marvelous. Six months ago it wae unknown. To-day it is all over tho country. It is authoritatively stated that they have hcen actually giving it away inSan Francisco to people afflicted with dyspepsia, sick headaches, indigestion and liver troubles, not to be paid for unless it cured. Such practical tests arc so startlingly convlnclng as to be almost sensational. r It is stated that two of the active principles of tho newremedy belong to the vegetablekingdom of California and are so well known to us all under common names that it would surpriso us if told them. But wc arc not surprised at anything Callfomian, and this recent discov ery of the new medicinal virtues of its vegeta ble kingdom is but another instanco of the astonishing possibilities of a soil and climate like ours. Nothing pays so well as behaving yourself. A Scrap ofPaper Saves llcr Life It was just an ordinary scrap of wrap ping paper, but it saved her life. She was in the last stages of consumption, told by physicians that she was incura ble and could live only a short time; she weighed les than seventy pounds. On a piece of wrapping paper she read of Dr. Kiiffe's New Discovery, and got a sample bettle: it helped her, she bought a larger bottle, it helped her more, bought another and grew better fast, continued its use and is now strong, healthy, rosy, plump, weighing 140 pounds.
