ASTORIA, OREGON:
"WEDNESDAY.. SEPTEJIBER 11, 1SS9.
A BAREFACED LIE.
It is an absolute fact tliat the "pau
per laborer" -which we bear so much
about in England, can buy more for
bis day's work than tbe "well paid"
American laborer with what be re
ceives for bis day's work. State Dem
ocrat, 7.
TnEab6ve is a sample of slusb
from the Democratic paper at Salem,
Gov. Pennoyer's official organ and
tbe presumed exponent of tbe Demo
cratic party of tbe state.
It Is so palpable a lie and demon
strates ignorance on tbe part of tbe
Democrat so completely tbat it requires
no mo retban publication to evince
its falsity.
Intelligent Democrats will doubt
less repudiate so absolute an endorse
ment of f fee trade, and will feel like
squelching the indiscreet editor who
champions free trade so openly and
foolishly.
The following, in connection with
the extract at the bead of this article,
furnishes good reading; bearing in
mind the wages the same class of
workmen receive in this country.
This is from the sworn statement of
inspector Nathaniel McKay, sent to
make impartial report on this very
matter:
I visited London docks at 6:30 one
morning to bear tbe roll-call for labor
ers. A thousand men were clamoring
for employment. I asked one laborer
what he got He said 4Jd. per hour.
These are what we call 'longshoremen.
A carpenter at work on a building
near by said he was getting 9d. per
hour, and his assistant was paid 5d.
The carpenter told me he paid 15s. per
week for rent His assistant said that
be paid 4s. Gd. for one room and
"privileges." This carpenter added
that his wife worked when she could,
and got 2s. a day. I waited until 8
o'clock to see the workmen on this
building eat their breakfast. Four of
them bad banded together, made some
tea in a big kettle, and brought out
bread and butter only. "That's all
for breakfast, sir," said one. He ex
plained that they usually had meat
for dinner as late in the week as
Wednesday, because they always bad
enough left over after their Sunday
meal to last till that time. From
Wednesday until the next Sunday
they went without meat, except, per
haps, bacon. The carpenter said:
"I net up at 4 o'clock in the morning,
and work from 6 until 5:30. When I
am out of work for three days at once
there is not a farthing in tbe house,
and we must live on what my wife
earns." The foreman of the gang bad
half a loaf of bread with a hole in it
about two inches square. In that
bole be bad placed some butter.
That was the way he carried it to his
work. He made some tea; most of
the other workmen, however, had a
herring a piece besides the bread and
tea. One fellow, luckier than the rest,
bad a piece of meat pie for dinner.
Comparison is invited between the
Democrat's statement and inspector
MaKay's statement.
How would American workmen like
to work for such free trade wages and
live on such free trade food?
ADVICE FROM BELOW STAIRS.
"Bridget, I would give all my wealth for.
half of your health."
"Sure, ma'am, you need only give $5, for
that's the jfricoof six bottles of 'J. V. S.,' as
the hoys call it Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla
will make you as strong as me, ma'am."
Mrs. J. Barron, of 142 Seventh street, Ban
Francisco, writes.: "I have been taking Joy'j
Vegetable Sarsaparilla with immense benefit,
It is perfectly splendid to build up nervous,
run-down and worn out women." Mrs. Fred
Loy, of S27 Ellis street, Mrs. G. "Werner of 235,
Berry street, and hundreds of others relate
the same experience with the pure vegetable
