ASTORIA. OREGON:
WEDNESDAY, ..SEPTEMBER 4, 1SS9.
Thebe are eleven or twelve thou
sand less Chinese now in British Co
lumbia than there were some time
ago. The S50 head tax has its effect.
The omission o any reference to
the Behring sea difficulty of the posi
tion the British government intends
taking in queen Victoria's speech pro
roguing parliament recently has
caused great indignation among the
belligerent Canadians.
Ax English syndicate is negotiating
for the purchase of all the American
tanneries. Ten million dollars have
.already been pledged for the purchase
of New England and New York tan
neries, and 50,000,000 more will be
expended to secure the others.

A Brooklyn man who has made a
calculation of the sums or. money
which Americans have distributed
during the last ten years to those sud
denly deprived of property, has esti
mated that 20,000,000 have been
contributed. This shows that the
Americans are equally energetic in
making money and in giving it away.
Oregon Making an Exhibition.
The Oregon delegation, consisting
of fifty-five gentlemen and ladies, ar
rived at 830 yesterday morning over
the Wisconsin Central road, and their
snecial cars were side tracked at the
old union depot, on Eeed street. The.
uregon people onng wun mem an
interesting exhibition -of their state's
products, which will be placed in the
exposition building, and will occupy
a space of 1,000 square feet. Two car
loads are filled with fruit, wheat, rye,
oats, barley, corn and grasses. The
grain is put up in pint sacks, and will
be distributed gratis at the exposition,
commencing Monday afternoon. The
delegation has peaches, pears and
plums in abundance, and they will be
given away during encampment week.
In addition to the above, 5,000 sam
ples of wheat, oats, barley and grasses
in sheaves, have been neatly ar
ranged for the inspection of visitors.
The exhibit is one of the largest
ever brought to the east from the Pa
cific coast, ind will prove a very in
teresting feature of the exposition.
The delegation is headed by E. B.
McElroy, commander of the Oregon
department, and the exhibit is in
charge of B. S. Cook. Milwaukee

AN TTGLY DISCOVER.
A. Report That Should Be Read.
"A recent analyzatlon in. Philadelphia by ft

San Fransitw Examiner,
Felled By Electricity.
Hitherto machines for felling trees
havebeen driven by steam power, but
this is sometimes inconvenient, espe
cially in thick woods, and electric
power has recently been adopted in
the tJaliciaii forests. Usually in such
machines the trunk is sawed, but in
this case it is drilled. "When the wood
is of a soft nature the drill has a
sweeping motion and cuts into the
trunk by means of cutting edges on
its. sides. The drill is actuated by an
electric motor mounted on a carriage,
which is brought up close to the tree
and shackled to it The motor is
capable of turning round -its vertical
axis, and the drill is geared to it in
m such a manner that it can turn through
"an arc or a circle and make a sweep
ing cut into the truuk.
The first cut made, the drill is ad
vanced a few inches and another sec
tion of the wood is removed in the
same way until the trunk is half sev
ered. It is then stamped to keep the
cut from closing, and the operation
continued Until it would be unsafe to
go on. The remainder is finished by
a handsaw or an ax. The current is
conveyed to the motor by insulated
leads brought through the forest from
a generator placed in some conven
ient site.
TIic Verdict Unanimous.
W. D. Suit, Drugcist. Bippus, Ind.,
testifies: "I can recommend Electric
Bitters as the very best remedy. Every
bottle sold has given relief in every case.
One man took six bottles, and was cured
of Rheumatism of 10 years' standing."
Abraham Hare, druggist," Bellville,
Ohio, affirms: "The best selling medi
cine I have ever handled in my 20 years'
experience, is Electric Bitters." Thou
sands of others have added their testi
mony, so mac tne verdict is unanimous
that Electric Bitters do cure diseases of
the Liver, Kidneys or Blood. Only a

A PHYSICIAN'S OPINION.
"I have been practicing medicine for
twenty years and have never been able to
put up a vegetable compound that would,
like Simmons Liver Regulator, promptly
and effectively move the Liver to action,
and at the same time aid (instead of weak
ening) the digestive and assimilative
