Poor Eun of Salmon in Northern Waters. Vesseela which left here last spring ' for the salmon-fishing grounds lu Ibe northenwatera are returning, and j qacn seems to connrm tne impression which was made a few months aco when the Jiertlia arrived from Ko djak so lightly laden, that the sea Eon would be a failure. The previous season wa3 the greatest ever known, the Bertha alone bringing down 10, 000 cases of salmon for the Alaska Commercial company. Encouraged by the outlook, a num ber of new vessels were fitted out and every week in the early part of the year witnessed the departure of a ves sel for tho Alaskan country, but the season is now nearly over, and with one or two exceptions those who have invested largely will be heavy losers on their venture. Tho latest advices received from the canneries are up to the middle of Augnst, and although nearly all of them are approximations, the returns tell their own story. I3y the early arrivals of vessels in San Francisco it was learned that the salmon run in all the rivers was poor, and the com panies which have been half success ful were obliged to cast their nets outside the nioutbs. of the rivers. Veiv few of the fishermen were pro pared for this and consequently suff ered. The Aleutian Island -tracking company's vessels were among the first on the fishing grounds, and the were prepared for the emergency, so the season's failure will not fall very heavily on them. They have pnt up about 31,000 cases. The Hume Packing company at last reports had about 17,500 cases packed; the Arctic Packing company, about 17,000 cases; the Kodiak Pack ing company, about 1,000; the Alaska Improvement company, 1G,500; Ford & Stokes, 12,000, and tho Boyal Park ing company, 0,000. At Cook's Inlet tho run was about the same as last year. The pack is over and the Cutting Packing com pany and tho Alaska Commercial company will have together about -15,000 cases for the season. The Karluk Packing companj at Karluk has put up about 33,000 cases, which is less than one-half of the yield at this time last season, the catch then amounting to 72,000 cases. At Chignak bay tho result is far be low expectation. There are three canneries on tho bay, and it is esti mated that altogether they will not put up more than 25,000 cases of salmon. Two canneiies which havo been started on Priuco "William Found havo put up. to July 20th, about 15,- 000 case?. The Arctic. Packing com pany at Kodiak has turned out S.OOO cases for the season, and the Kodiak Packing company will font up about the same result. The greatest failures of all is that of tho two canneries on Kiak island, in the Copper river. They were erected this season at an outlay which is estimated to havo reached into the hundred thonsauds. The facilities were sufficient for the packing of from 50,000 to 10,000 cases of salmon, and it was confidently expected that long before this time at least 50,000 cases would have been put up. The extent of the failure can be surmised when it is made known that only 5,000 cases havo been put up on Copper river. The worst feature of the matter is tho fact that nearly all of tho can neries had -largo contracts to deliver their prospective salmon to the whole sale dealers here, having implicit faith in the run. S. F. Chronicle, 1. Sleeplessness. Narcotics and sedatives murder sleep: tins unnatural stupor is soon followed by ill effects. .Simmons 'Liver l'cgu lator removes the cause of remissness and sleeplessness by regulating the bowels, by establishing good digestion and by quieting the nerves.
