ASTORIA. OREGON:
SUNDAY SEPTEMDER 1. 1889.
The machinery and materials for
government work at Yaquina bay,
were snipped over the Canadian Pa
cific. President Harrison says lie has
not yet decided upon calling an extra
session of congress.
The tin mines of the Black Hills,
Dak., are beginning to attract general
attention. It has long been doubted
if we had any good tin ore in this
country, but these new mines are
likely to rival those of Cornwall and
Bolivia and Peru.
Extracts published from time to
time in The Astorian, show that our
valley neighbors are fully awake to
the necessity of securing connection
with the railroad now building from
Astoria. "We can assure our neigh
bors that we mean business this time;
that road is going to be built, and it
is of more importance to the "Willam
ette valley and western Oregon than
anything else now before the public.
It means a new era for this state, and
will add value to every quarter seo
tion from the Snake river to the sea.
It is a fact worth thinking about in
all its bearings that over 22,000,000
acres of United States soil are owned
by citizens of European countries.
This vast acreage owned by aliens is
equal to niue states of the size of Mas
sachusetts. The alien English land
lords in Ireland, who are properly
charged with responsibility for nine
tenths of the miseries and oppressions
endured by the Irish people, do not
own half as many acres there as alien
Europeans own in this country. It is
time congress did something decisive
in the way of legislating the large
alien land syndicate off American soil.
a
The subjects considered at the con
ference at San Francisco, which closed
yesterday, and which was attended by
an Astoria delegation composed of
five members, were:
The permanent establishment of
ocean mail steamship lines on Pacific
ocean routes, and the liberal compen
sation by the government for the car
riage of ocean mails on said lines, by
steamships available for war and
transport purposes.
The application of the interstate
commerce law to the American carry
ing trade of the Canadian Pacific
railway, or the abolition of the bond
ing system for railway carriage through
foreign territory.
The maritime defense of Pacific coast
ports.
An ocean telegraph cable to Aus
tralia via Pacific islands.
The energetic construction of the
Nicaragua canal a3 a means of na
tional defense and commercial devel
opment. The encouragement of maritime
commerce and increased energy in the
construction of a navy.
A Railroad Meeting.
All citizens of Hillsboro and vicin
ity who are interested in securing the
terminus of the Astoria railroad at or
near Hillsboro, are hereby requested
to meet at the court house in Hills
boro on Monday evening next, at 7:30
p. si. Representatives of the railroad
company have been invited to be
present The railroad is going to be
built We want the terminus
and must have it To receive this we
must be up and doing, and must make
a strong pull, and a pull all together.
S. T. Linklater,
President Board of Trustees.

AN UGLY DISCOVERT.
A Report That Should Bo Read.
'A recent analyzatloa In Philadelphia by a
celebrated chemist of ten popular brands ot
sarsaparilla discloses the astonishing fact that
these ten samples of blood purifiers (?) con
tained in the aggregate tixlecn different min
erals, eleven of which wero active poisons.
Iodide of potash was discovered In every sam
ple, mercury was found In all but two, while
arsenic existed In six of tho ten brands. Not
one brand was the pure article."
A reporter took tho abovo clipping to E. W.
Joy, tho manufacturer of Joy's Vegetable Sar
Baparllla. Mr. Joy exhibited no surprise. He
said druggists knew it He Eaid he long aga
saw tho crying need for a safe and absolutely

Some Fortunate Speculations.
The Beith Bros, have been exceed
ingly fortunate in their speculations
in Tacoma dirt They have more than
doubled their money on nearly every
transaction, and Thursday, it is said,
Eugene made a deal which has
eclipsed them all. He bought a piece
of property for 8,000, and before the
day closed was asked by a would be
purchaser to set his own price on the
dirt "I have no price," answered Eu
gene. "I will give you 24,000 for
the bargain," said the man, but Mr.
Beith kept the property in spite of
this tempting offer. East Oregonian.
All the patent medicines advertised

Specials to The Astorian.
Portland, Aug. 3L Lee Lung,
the Chinaman whose wife eloped with
another man taking $1,000 in coin,
had the case against her dismissed,
saying he loved her so well he would
cause her no trouble.
Four prisoners, Arthur O'Neill,
Sam Sheldon, J. "Wilson, and Thomas
Barry broke from the county jail this
morning and escaped. At 5 o'clock
this morning expoliceman Maher who
has been at work in the court house
assisting in making repairs there went
into judge Catlin's office where he
found a square hole 11 by 12 inches
cut through the floor in an ante room
as clean as if the work had been done
with a fine saw. He came to the con
clusion that there had been a jail
break and aroused jailor Hoxie. No
blame can be attached to the custo
dian of the prison. Fault lies with
those whose duty it is to provide a
safe place of detention for criminals.
J. F. "Warren, chief of police of
Spokane Falls arrived here this morn
ing from California, having in custody
Robert Inglis of that city. Inglis was
employed as assistant to Harry Hay-
ward who had charge of the distribu
tion of relief funds sent there. The
embezzled amount is estimated at
f rom $300 to $500. He was arrested
at Chico, last Tuesday and is now
confined in the city jail here. He will
be taken home to-morrow morning.
Chief Warren when he arrives at
Spokane Falls will have travelled
somewhat over 2,000 miles. As he
has not been very hard at work of
late he is greatly enjoying his trip.
He reports business at Spokane livelier
than it has ever been before. A great
number of working men are daily
coming in, all of whom immediately
secure employment.
COLLECTION of duties.
"Washington, Aug. 31. The secre
tary of the treasury has issued an
order to collectors of customs refer
ring to erroneous classifications made
by them in the interest of seizures
made under a department circular of
January 29, 1887. It appears that
many articles are imported through
the mails, the classification of which
is not well defined, and collectors
have released them upon the payment
of a fine equal in amount to the duty.
ThiB is considered by them as proper,
without due regard to classification.
Collectors are enjoined to study care
fully the classifications, so as not to
release goods for less than is due for
them under the tariff schedule.

testifies: "1 can recommend Electric
Bitters as the very best remedy. Every
bottle sold has given relief in every case.
One man took six bottles, and was cured
of Kheuinatism of 10 years' standing."
Abraham Hare, druggist, Dellville,
Ohio, affirms: "The best selling medi
cine I have ever handled in 111320 years'
experience, is Electric Bitters." Thou
sands of others have added their testi
mony, so that the verdict is unanimous
that Electric Bitters do cure diseases of
